I have Medicare Advantage and was approved for CGM coverage last year, my insurer said they have to follow Medicare guidelines, but my particular insurance does not have a working agreement with Dexcom, so I had to go through a medical supply business that does, Ins provided me 2 names, one being Edgepark Medical. CGM devices are classified as durable medical equipment, so are covered under Part B guidelines with a co-pay.
I’m on traditional Medicare and for the past 15 months have been getting my Dexcom G5 supplies directly from Dexcom. Dexcom also supplied me with 150 Contour Next test strips a month and I supplemented by buying a few extra vials, as needed, from Amazon for about $24 per 100 strips.
Then I decided I wanted to move to a Verio IQ meter. So I stopped getting strips from Dexcom and a month later submitted a prescription for the Verio strips to my local CVS and they happily gave me 11 boxes (a 90 day supply) and I paid them $18. I like the meter a lot And I’m actually paying a little less for more strips. I think the secret to this working was to give it a month between Medicare paying Dexcom for strips before asking them to pay for CVS strips.
I’ll also add that I could probably get that $18 covered, by my supplemental plan, but I’m not sure CVS works with BCBS. And a three month supply from CVS on the corner is pretty easy. So I’m going to pick my battles and not worry about $6 a month.
Using the Dexcom G5. Medicare pays all but $50. Which my private insurance pays. As for test strips, No Idea I get mine thru the V.A.
