started metformin Wednesday at supper time. I don’t think is is help with my sugars yet. but it is help with weight loss in a not so fun way. I have been to the bathroom at least 15 times since 1am this morning. doctor says it should go away on it’s own though.

Metformin, for those that can tolerate it, is an excellent medication with a lot of history and some probably good side effects. It takes several days to ‘build up’ to its full effect in the body, so it is not surprising that it hasn’t helped with your blood glucose yet. In addition, many doctors start patients out on a smaller dose, and slowly ramp up to the needed dose over time (to help with side-effects).
In any case, I wish you luck with it! I could not tolerate it myself, but it was probably the wrong option for my, anyway.

Some folks that have side effects from it have said that switching to the extended release version got rid of them but I would give it a chance first and see if they go away.

How are you doing on the Metformin? I started on May 11 with 1 pill (500) at breakfast and another pill (500) with dinner or if I forget nearer bedtime. My gastric side effects have eased up as long as I don’t have a large amount of processed carbs and the headaches only happen rarely now. I’m still not seeing great results in a lower fasting reading…never below 8.5 but much better than the 16.9s that would occasionally show up. I hope that you are seeing some good results
Metformin is great combined with other meds. It is also a good all around drug so talk to doc at next app.

Have you tried adjusting the dosages? or switching to alternatives.

That’s a daily dose of 1000. I believe the max daily dose for metformin is 2550. You still have some wiggle room. It is good to start lower to allow an adjustment period and lessen the side effects. Nothing says you must go to a higher dose but you can. That’s a decision to be made by you and your doctor.
Like @McChesney says, metformin plays well with other meds.

It takes at least a week on Metformin until you will see reduced blood sugar levels.
