Miss Manners (& her T1 son) Responds

A lot of pretty smart people would tell you that blood is a lot more potentially biohazardous than excrement.

Yep, exactly. One of my pet peeves is people who say, "I'm legally blind without my glasses." The very definition of legal blindness states 20/200 vision or less in the better eye WITH correction (glasses or contact lenses), so it's impossible to be legally blind in one eye or to be legally blind without glasses but not with them (though it is possible to still be visually impaired with glasses even if one is not legally blind).

But again, most people who make those statements don't know the legal definition of blindness ... and a lot of times it's their doctors (who should know!) who are giving them this information, so I can't blame them, but do educate.

lol.. I agree Zoe… mr. manners, miss manners- not something I will listen to. But when he tried to tell pwd that they had to be discreet or go to a restroom to do that and to test then I have a problem with that, especially in light of the fact that he doesn't do that himself, so obviously he knows that this is not a good idea for many reasons.

Only if you have a communicable condition and you test in a way that could expose you to one etc., but then that would be every reason not to test in a place where there is excrement & where germs are easily spread. But miss or mr. manner's comment was about discretion and manners, otherwise they wouldn't be telling you to scurry off to an unsanitary bathroom to do bg testing regardless of whether it is an emergency or not. I don't know about you, but I wouldn't rush off to a restroom when I have low blood sugar symptoms, or anywhere else. I test wherever I am, if I test at all at first, usually if it's bad I treat it and test later.

We all know that there is no way we can live a semi- normal life and be safe and not test in public places, that is why there are now fortunately laws that give us the right to do that, without going to a restroom and without concealing it at all if that is what we choose.

I think that is why they have sterile rooms in most places where blood is drawn- a bathroom is only used for urine/stool samples etc.
