It seems my my life these days can get pretty repetitive with D. I’m not complaining at all. My BG is good and stable, I’m healthy and active, and overall have a very good life. But I have started to notice how certain tasks dominate my life. You can swap out different activities for work on the weekends, but for the most part my day(s) are pretty static:
5:30 Wake
5:31 Test BG (89 sweet)
5:45 Test cat (145 sweet)
5:46 Make breakfast for cat, give insulin
5:50 Make breakfast for me
6:15 head to pool, swim 30 laps
6:45 Test (65 little low but expected)
6:50-7:45 40 more laps
7:45 Test (75 perfect)
8:00 Work (or play on weekend)
11:30 Test pre-lunch and eat lunch (88 good)
12:30 Test 126 (139 on sushi day)
1:30 Test 110 (120 on sushi day)
1:30 - 5:00 Work (play on weekend)
5:30 Test pre-dinner (84 good**)
5:35 Test cat (180 ok)
5:40 Fix dinner for cat, give insulin
5:45 Eat then head back to pool
6:15 - 6:45 Swim 40 laps and test (70 sweet)
6:50 - 7:45 Swim 35 laps and test (82 cool)
7:45 - 9:30 Catch up on email, work watch tv etc
9:30 Test (89 cool)
9:45 sleep
Wash, rinse repeat… for the rest of my life.
** on the occasional screw up, swap this number with a 200!!
Note, none of the above could be possible with the support of my wonderful wife. Thank you!
Oh no!! Kitty has D too!!?? Your numbers are really good. Such discipline.
Kitty is T1 for about 3 or 4 years now. He is also practicing good control, or should i say, i practice it on him and he puts up me pricking and poking him a few times a day
Bubbalov, I go CRAZYtrying to have numbers like that-Way to go!
Thanks. Low carb and lots of swimming. Keeping a pretty even schedule is also a big help and i guess being a little OCD with a supportive wife is key
Well done! Your A1C must be gorgeous. Since I’ve had the CGM and the pump, I’m doing pretty well. My mornings were a bit above 130, but I seem to have figured out the overnight basal rate. I wish I were as good at this as you are. I’ve got a supportive partner and a touch(?) of OCD as well. Once I focused it on the D, it gave me something productive to obsess over. The cat, too? Where do you get a blood sample to test? Cat’s have the same BG sitch we do? How do you count kitty’s carbs?
A1c last week was 5.0, better than my wife’s non diabetic 5.4
For the cat, they recommend the ear (which i dont do) or their pads. He seems to like the big pad on his back left foot. Cant get him anywhere else. I don’t count carb, but i give him high protein food that i weigh. if i change his food, then i feed him a couple times and run a curve testing him every hour for 12 hours. Then its a matter of judging his pre-prandial number with insulin dose. so for example, if he is 150 he gets one unit. 200 he gets 1.75 units. He is pretty stable with that although every now and then he runs around a little too much and has gone low and gets a little corn syrup. His doc would prefer i keep him up around 300 but cats are ok down to 50. I keep him around 100-200 on his current regimen. its taken me a few years to work out his program, but me getting D has helped a lot in my understanding of his treatment.
I admire you for taking such good care of your cat! Not everyone would be so patient with a diabetic cat. What are cats like when they go low? Do they fall asleep? I’m not sure I’d know the difference given that my cats sleep a lot.
At first he can get lethargic, but then he can get that way anytime, but that is the first indication. If i try to wake him up and he is low, i will notice slight twitch in his legs. The light twitching means he is close to go having a seizure so you have to act pretty quick. fortunately this is only happened a few times in the 3 or 4 years i have been treating him. a lot of it is just noticing differences in his behaviors which can be a little tricky. He is about 15 now and still going strong so i guess I’m doing something right!
Nothing to admire though, he deserves it and has been great for the entire family. My kids adore him!
Wow. Fantastic work on your sugars and the cats as well. Let me ask you, what is it that you have on sushi day?
