My GP wants me to start taking statins even though my cholesterol is 4.3mmol/l (167mg/dl)

Agree to disagree.

Lois:

I found a pretty good way to bring up that good cholesterol, (oh yeah i use statins but could not elevate my good cholesterol) I use almonds, jsut a few a day lifted my good stuff about 5 points. It does work.

Rick:

Since this message was so hard to find would you contact me at my site and give me some more details about bringing up the good cholesterol?

Fast-paced, for sure. My real question is that do DRs believe their patients will follow a diet to lower their cholesterol? How many people really do? OR, do they wait until the situation requires statins? People are people all over the world and I would bet that most don’t make the diet changes they should … probably proportionate to their age. You know, set in their ways!!!

Forgive me, but I’m slightly confused by your statement Lois. I posted my question because I’m interested to hear the opinions of other diabetics - isn’t that the whole point of posting on a forum???

I’m a little hurt that you think I’m “out to pick a fight” just to air my disagreement with three doctors. Firstly, I don’t have a disagreement with any of my doctors, secondly I really don’t think it’s in the spirit of TuDiabetes to accuse members of posting just to stir up trouble when really all I wanted was some help from people who may know more than me. A Wikipedia entry doesn’t tell you everything!!

Not to start up the bruhaha again, but in an article I just came across that I had saved, Suzy Cohen in Ask the Pharmacist (in the Ft Lauderdale Sun Sentinel 1/21) states that statins, diabetic meds, and other pharmaceuticals can effect CoQ10 levels which then can cause liver damage, muscle weakness, leg cramps, memory loss, shortness of breath, cardiac arrhythmias, heart attack, stroke or rhabdomyolysis, even if your cholesterol is perfect. She recommends supplementing with 30 to 100 mg per day of a softgel, soyfree CoQ10 unless you are older than 30 or have a number of conditions or take a CoQ10 “mugger” such as statins. In that case, she recommends 100 to 200 mg of ubiquinol, also called QH, the active, body ready form of CoQ10.
Is anyone familiar with it?
