Need Your Thinking Caps. What's Happening To Me?

So Gerri, two questions: Are your numbers back to normal and what was your conclusion if any as to what happened? (Other than the gremlins)

I strongly second the comment about other forums. I suspect we have all had the experience of just not feeling "at ease" with some group or other; I know I have.

This community is a priceless resource. Of course, it's an enormous well of shared experience to draw upon, but what makes it really special is the open, welcoming, non-judgmental conduct of all concerned.

" The combo of the sun & exertion drops me while gardening" wrote Gerri. I found this out the hard way Girlie. I just read your post today ( Sunday p.m.).I forgot to lower my basals while gardening yesterday, and I could not tell if the sweating was from the hunidity, lifting, carrying, raking or from low blood sugars. I got angry at the Miracle Grow for being in a green container, then I knew.LOL I went inside , tested I was 31!!! Drank some Sunny D , waited 20 minutes, then ate 1/2 of peaunut butter sandwich, which I dual wave bolussed for. I lowered the basals to 80% in preparation for returning to my outdoor tasks, but BG still dropped to 56 about an hour and a half later.. This time , however, I was not at all displeased with the Rose bulb bone meal powder, a plant supplement..HAHA So Ijust popped in some Skittles and keot going.. My garden now looks fabulous.

God bless,
Brunetta

Here's a big ol' AFFIRMATIVE for you, DavidSQ!

Late to this thread, but I hafta say I'm glad you're still in the land of the living, unharmed if greatly frightened!

Like most, I have exactly no idea why that might have happened, but wonder whether there is such a thing as an insulin depot that suddenly decides to let loose? Fishing for ducks, here!

Hugs,

Natalie ._c-

Blasted Miracle Grow. The nerve to be in a green container-lol.

You have roses. Beautiful.

I did a lot of gardending today. Was a gorgeous day to pull weeds & spread mulch. I could have taken less basal had I prepared for it, but decided too late. I don't have a pump, so stayed hydrated & kept the jelly beans close by.

Hi Zoe,

Numbers are back to normal. Gremlins are my first choice for an answer. Gremlins aside, I think my pancreas sent out a small spurt that sent me down the rabbit hole & Levemir doses may have been too close together. I'm now taking Levemir doses further apart & a lower daytime basal dose. Thanks for asking.

Thanks, Natalie. Very glad to be still among the living. Your suggestion was my first thought because it was like being hit by a truck, the insulin truck.

Sounds like you have a good plan for some variables - and of course you are going to spray for gremlins! I don't kill bugs and worms, but scoop them up in a container and bring them outside - adios gremlins!

Sent away for anti-gremlin spray. Specifically requested no eye of newt.

Well that's ok then!

Was going to hang up wreaths of garlic, but I use so much that I wouldn't have enough to scare any away.

I will post pictures of my roses when they bloom again a liitle later in the summer. I think I was angry at the Miracle Grow box because I felt it was respomsible for a slight stumble I had..: "How dare you be green like the grass, and make me almost fall down?! I will sue the company for making the box too camolfloauged(sp?)!".. Of course the addled hypo brain never considers that lack of coordination is caused by the hypo in question.. HA HA .Gerri, glad you got some work done. I will be back to a bit of gardening in the late afternoon, when it cools off.
God bless,
Brunetta

Would love to see pics of your roses. Hypo aside, yours is a valid point about the box being green & unable to be seen on the grass. Can see why the company choose green, but it should have a red or orange lid. I've stepped on my trowel many times & lost my clippers. They should should have brightly colored handles.

Gerri's answer is pretty much dead on, except once in a cell, it will be metabolised pretty quickly into carbon dioxide and water. It won't be excreted from any cell it enters.

It's an intravenous injection which means that it doesn't have to be digested through the gut or any other tissue for that matter. That cut's down on a lot of the processing time. Cells will have access to it immediately, and since it raises BG so quickly, that means that as long as there is insulin present, the huge concentration gradient from blood to cell will drive rapid movement into the cells.

Also, as with any high BG, you'll be excreting excess dextrose, any that doesn't enter a cell, through the kidneys into urine.

To clarify: I believe stress sends me upward, while too much thinking or anticipation send me downward. I have had a few severe insulin reactions that happened to fall the night before I had to do something important. I think the link could be universal? But, of course, we all have different feelings in different situations.

Thanks for a more thorough explanation. Dextrose IV is the way to go. Heard from Melissa BL., who's father is a paramedic. He said dextrose IV is what's commonly used, not glucagon.

Yeah, my brother in law is a paramedic. I've seen him in action on ride along or two. Never personally experienced it, but I've definitely seen it done.

Hope it's something you never have to experience again Gerri.

I sure hope not, thanks.

I want to start a discussion about self-treating with IV dextrose because of the expense, expiration & side-effects of glucagon & mostly because IV dextrose is faster acting. Would you mind asking your brother-in-law if he thinks this is feasible & where training for this may be available?

A very intriguing idea. I would very much like to see a discussion of this.
