Not good

Hey all I haven’t been doing too good with my pump, not going all of my bolus, not checking bloodsugars… Just need to get back on track but can’t figure out how…

What’s the hardest part for you? You get the pump loaded with insulin and you’re connected, and then? Are you not taking full boluses because you might go low?

The hardest part is eating I kno it sounds weird but I don’t eat much and when I do eat I do insulin and then I’m low within 30-40 mins or I’m waking up shaking and sweating…

how . . . one step at a time.

Believe it not, you don’t have to bolus every time you eat something. It depends entirely on what you eat.

So . . .

Test your blood sugar before you eat. Measure the amount of carbs in your meal. (Look at the label, look it up in a book or an online or handheld database). Use the bolus wizard/calculator on your pump.

You might also consider whether your carb:insulin ratio is too high.

One step at at ime.

Good luck,

Terry

I keep my calorie king with me wherever I go! It’s my bible, guess it’s all just adjustment

Thnx

Something sure isn’t working if you are hitting lows within 30-40 minutes after bolusing. I think Terry has pointed you in the right direction–you need to test more often and from there you can start to figure out what’s happening and you will feel a lot better!

Another thing you could do at some point is check that your basal rate is not dropping you to lows. I’m on MDI and whenever I have a phase of not eating as much food, my usual basal dose becomes too much. You have the potential to feel great no matter how little or how much you eat because a pump allows you to customize your basal. I really encourage you to test more often and take advantage of what a pumping offers!

Is there any chance you could have gastroparesis? If your digestion is slow, then the insulin you take before a meal is working faster than what your food is digesting - that would also cause a low after you eat.

As for getting back on track, just take one step at a time. Maybe say tomorrow, I will check my BS at least 2 times - even something small will be better than nothing. Do that for a couple days, then add in another test. Getting back to regular testing will help get the other stuff figured out.

Other than your rates needing adjusting, I was going to suggest the possibility of gastroparesis also. My lows after eating & highs many hours later is caused by gastroparesis. I bolus an hour after eating & test a lot. Hate lows!

Pick a goal for the day. Small steps are easier to not get overwhelmed.
