Omnipod - best medicare part d plan

No I have not experienced Fiasp losing gusto a month after opening the vial. In fact, I use almost empty vials (20 units or so left in them) as my “carry around spares” for syringe correction shots, meal bolus etc. and the Fiasp works well even after a month or two. The problem I have had with Fiasp and pods is poor absorption on Day 3. The symptom is an after meal spike much higher than expected that is difficult to correct. When that happens I either change out the pod or switch to syringe for correction and meal bolus shots.

I’ve never heard that before - 2 weeks? I don’t think so. I’ve been on it for 61 years. I’ve never had it expire, but it does go bad if not refrigerated for too long.

I agree, but was quoting Timothy to counter his 2 week suggestion.

Check the linked document.

Thank you so much Laddie. I just started on an Omnipod in late November 2021.
My basal rates are fairly effective and I do know how to change them if need be.

Just wondering why Fiasp tends to lose its effectiveness after about a month. Others have said on this board they’ve never experienced that phenomenon. Thanks so much for your response - very appreciated! I’m in Canada and it takes Health Canada quite a long time to approve new insulins etc. But thanks again - I will look into Lyumjev!

The Omnipod web site says "The following U-100 rapid-acting insulin analogs have been tested and found to be safe for use in the Pod: Novolog®, Humalog®, or Apidra®. " But I’ve been using Fiasp in pods for 2 years with satisfactory results. I am considering switching from Fiasp to Novolog in late March to see if I can get better results and will keep you posted.

Thank you so much John58 - I do appreciate hearing about this when you make the change.
I’m thinking of it to reduce costs, even though I live in Canada.
Alberta is the province next to BC where Vancouver is located.
You could be aware of this so I mean no offence at all - just want to make sure you understand the scenario.
Our current Premier is buddies with Pat Cruz, that should tell you all you need to know.
No offence intended if you support Pat Cruz either!

Cheers and all the best,

Thanks, same! FYI I probably could sing O Canada straight through…I’ve been a Canada fan almost as long as I’ve played ice hockey (50+ years). I have often vacationed there. Usually BC but have enjoyed Banff. But one of my retirement hobbies is tuning out all politicians except my local city council and mayor. The rest have become pretty easy to ignore.

According to Lilly, which is who makes the insulin that I use, open insulin is good for 14 days unrefrigerated and 28 days if you keep it refrigerated.

That’s where I got the 14 days from. I keep my current bottle at room temperature because at some point I was told it’s better to load your pump with room temp insulin.

I’ve gone passed the 14 days many times and I’ve not had any issues. I use vials. I don’t use pens or cartridges.

I have never seen 14 days and maybe you could provide a link saying that. Everything I see from Lilly about Humalog says 28 days.

Good thinking! It’s difficult these days and my heart breaks for Ukraine.
Glad to hear you love Canada - wish more felt the same way!
My brother lives in Palm Spring with my senior mother. She has dementia and it’s progressing.
I’ll likely be back there soon so I can help out too.
I feel we all need to contribute as well in our Mom’s care.

Cheers!

It’s actually Ted Cruz who our premier is buddies with - I messed up the name. So sorry!

I tried Novolog in the Omnipod 5 for a short while and never mastered the pre-bolus timing…so I switched back to Fiasp. I have been satisfied with Fiasp in the Omnipod 5 for a few months now and hope to continue with it.

I did this same analysis and made the switch away from the Medicare Advantage plan that I had started with and into a Medigap and a Part D prescription plan. I am not 100% convinced that the Medicare Advantage plan would have been inadequate in the future but felt pressured by the deadline to switch this year, my first year in Medicare. Time will tell if this was a good move.

I ended up with Cigna Part D and am hoping the coverage of Omnipod plus insulins will work out well. They seem to have a short list of covered insulins but I guess that’s par for the course these days. I will either be switching to Lyumjev for use in the Omnipod or will be driving to Canada for Fiasp.
