I started the Omnipod 12-15-08 after being on MDI for almost 3 years. While I enjoy the freedom of not having to do 6+ daily injections, I’ve encountered an unsual problem with the Omnipod that even the customer service people at Insulet can’t answer. Each time I change the pod, my bg goes way up, sometimes into the 200 range. I’m currently trying a +50% temp basal for 3 hours to try to offset this rise I get when I change the pod. I would appreciate any comments on this situation as my pump trainer jokingly told me to try a glass of Jack Daniels (and I don’t drink alcohol).
I have that same problem! I had a discussion about it, but can’t seem to find it. I discussed it with my CDE & Endo. They suggested that I take a couple units after putting the new pod on to counter act the high. Sometimes it takes a little bit of time for the insulin to actually be absorped. So I do 1 unit before I change the pod and 2 units after I change the pod. I started out with .5 and kept on going up until it leveled out. Best of luck!
Thank you sooooo much for your answer. I’ve struggled with this problem almost since the first pod change and no one, and I do mean no one, came up with any sort of workable suggestion. I will try your suggestion and hope that it works for me as it does for you. I also seem to have higher numbers on day 3 than I do on days 1 & 2. I suspect I should be changing pods after 2 days instead of 3. But I don’t have good insurance so I’ve been reluctant to try the 2 day routine.
how long are you taking the pod off? sometimes, i’ll take the pod off right before i take a shower, and put a new one on as soon as i get out of the shower (about 30 minutes… lol. YES! i know i take long showers. but they’re sooooo good!). during that 30 minutes, i can go up about 30-40 points. not as much as you, but… when i know i’ll have the pod off for a little bit, i bolus a bit right before i take it off. if you do this, make sure you wait a few minutes before taking the pod off. once, i took it off within a minute of bolusing, and there was insulin sitting on my skin when i took the pod off. so, give a few minutes for the insulin to absorb.
lol, Yes I take long showers too. Just never thought of taking a “mini” break from the pod by removing it just before my shower if I’m going to be doing a change anyway. Thank you for the helpful hints. I was getting really discouraged because no one here in my town seemed to be able to offer any help.
