PCOS and diabetes

I have a question about PCOS and diabetes. Does anyone have PCOS with diabetes and on metiform? What does it do? Does it help?

Hi Rachel,

Do you mean Metformin? Lots of discussions about Metformin if want to search past threads.

This could be a stupid question, but what is a PCOS?

It’s a woman thing…

It stands for PolyCystic Ovarian Syndrome.

I have PCOS and am diabetic and I was on metforming while on birthcontrol. I don’t know if it helped my PCOS, but it made me very fertile because I got pregnant. I had c-section and my ob cut out some cyst while he was there. I know it’s not very helpful, just sharing my experience.

Thank you for sharing mywife was just diagnosed with PCOS and was concerned about fertility. So what makes you more fertile??? The Metformin?

As far as I know, PCOS is a metabolic disorder, predominantly caused by insulin resistance. I have heard of both metformin and TZDs like actos and avandia being prescribed off label (they are not indicated for this problem) for this problem. They all help reduce insulin resistance and I suppose help increase fertility as a result.

PCOS is a huge risk factor for type 2 diabetes and does share a few things, insulin resistance in particular. Metformin is used to treat the insulin resistance and it also can help aid weight loss which is often an issue with PCOS. Check out www.soulcysters.com if you want to get the low down on it, every possible bit of info you could want is there and there are many women who post their that have diabetes and PCOS who are more than willing to share their story.

Are you a type 1 diabetic? My 14 year old is a type 1 diabetic and was told she had PCOS. I do not know anything about PCOS. would like to hear from others.

Hi @pdirks. I actually only was diagnosed with T2 after I was diagnosed with PCOS. There are insulin resistant (IR) forms of PCOS as well as non-insulin resistant. The thing about PCOS is that it is a syndrome - a collection of symptoms that seem to be related and are grouped together. For me, PCOS was directly related to my insulin resistance, and I probably had it for years without knowing about it (often diagnosed during puberty, I didn’t find out until I was 29).

What questions do you have about PCOS, particularly?

The doc did not tell us anything. Just call and said she had Pcos. She has been a type 1 diabetic for 6 years. And she has had no period for about a year. Being a type 1 that can happen. I have a call into the Diabetic Doc to find out what to do now. I do not know if it is insulin resistance. She has a lot of symptom facial hair, weight gain, to many male hormones. I ask what do we do and we were told to loss weight. And I have her put on birth control pills to help with the periods. I’m just trying to learn more about this.
