Pregnancy blood glucose

I am wondering if anyone has insight on what your glucose should be pre and post meal during pregnancy. Here is what I’ve read:

100gram glucose bolus given:
Fasting should be below 95
1 hour after the bolus it should be less then 180
2 hours after the bolus it should be less then 155
3 hours after the bolus it should be less then 140

If 2 of these are abnormal, then the patient is diagnosed with gestational diabetes and is started on insulin.

Does this sound right? Is this attainable or idealistic?

I don’t know about the glucose shot, but I was told to aim for 130 or below 1 hour after meals. (That’s pre-pregnancy).

were you able to do that? i find that my bg takes a lot longer to come down after meals…

I was put on Metformin during pregnancy for my gestational diabetes instead of insulin.

What you’re listing above are the diagnostic criteria for gestational diabetes not the target blood sugars.

Have you asked your dr about your bg goals for pregnancy? Usually they are <95 fasting and <120 2 hours after meals. Low end of normal range.

Well, I’m trying! And yes, for the most part I’m within range. But I’m in the honeymoon phase, so it’s probably easier for me right now.

Can I ask you a few questions about gestational for an article I am writing?

I’m a certified diabetes educator; the BG goals for pregnancy are quite a bit tighter than for non-diabetes. Pre-pregnancy: fasting = 70-110, pre-meal = 120 or less, 2 hr. post-meal = 140 or less (American College of Endocrinolgy recommendations). During pregnancy: fasting = less than 100, pre-meal = 120 or less, 1 hr. post meal = 120 or less. Tightest numbers need to be during the 1st & 3rd trimesters. Some docs use different parameters so always best to follow what your doc recommends. The only oral med approved during pregnancy is glipizide; most use insulin. Metformin is sometimes continued when a Mom took it pre-pregnancy for PCOS or to improve fertility; FDA is looking at it for use during pregnancy & most of us feel it will be approved. Hope that helps!!
