Question About Site Changes?

I am absolutely in love with my new Animas pump. However, I have a question about the infusion sets. I can’t seem to keep one in for longer than 1 day, or 2 if i’m lucky. The problem is that it leaks after a day; and I think its because of my exercising. I’m starting to realize i’m developing more muscle even in the fatty areas of my stomach, and I think the cannula is bending slightly because of it… Is it common to change so frequent?

Just curious as to what type of infusion set you’re using. I train multiple times a day plus being on the water (when it’s warm enough of course) and haven’t had a problem except when using a skin moisturizer or sunscreen in the area of the infusion set.
If you are using a 90degree set and feel that you don’t have enough body fat, try using an angled set. Everyone seems to have their personal preferences in terms of sets, for me I love the inset II 90s. I’ve tried the 30s and they are my backup.

I asked my trainer about the inset 30, she was absolutely against it (for my body type). I use the straight infusion set. Maybe I need to give it some more time. I might be still getting used to the tubing. I contemplated the fact that I could be tugging more than I realized. However, bottom line, I still wind up changing it a day faster than I’d like to…

:frowning:

If I exercised more, maybe I’d have the same problem. No clue… One thought - maybe try taping the tubing with some slack to it before exercising?? Just a thought.

When I’ve had issues with slippage and adhesive not holding in the past - liquid bandage over the material part, iv coverings (those things stick man!), skin prep before putting infusion set in (makes skin sticky), um … ensure skin is dry (you’re not sweating or just out of shower) before you put it in.
As for the tubing … tuck it in! Doorknobs are your enemy! Other options are to put the pump in a spi belt around your waist so that the tubing isn’t just hanging there, it’s wrapped around your body a little, not as much slack.
Also, how long is your tubing …from what I recall there are two lengths? It’s been a while since i actually looked at the options of what to order!
good luck!

Have you tried Mastisol? I have seen that many people on this site use it when they have problems with infusion sets sticking.

Even when my sites stick, I have to change after 2 days. I use a 90 degree steel needle. If I try to go longer I get bleeding at the site or insulin leakage. It might be the area you are using, or just the way your body works.

My issue is not really the sticking. It actually sticks very well on me. The issue really is my new developing muscles that bend the cannula, or when the cannula bends as a result of an exercize. I have decided to request for a greater prescription of infusion sets, cause I have a feeling that this is going to be something I have to live with when summertime comes.

One of the reasons I had to go to a metal needle vs a cannula is that it seemed to clog easily. That might help you a bit.

Hmmmm. Ok… I’ll look in to that… A metal needle seems scary (at least in terms of exercising), just because it’s non-flexible…

I’ve done some “extreme” gardening - building stone walls, digging, carrying large loads with out a problem. I’ve also done yoga without a problem.

The only downside I’ve found is when we hit DisneyWorld. I’ve learned to move my sites depending on where I think the safety bar will hit on the ride

Sounds like you should look for sets with shorter canulas. I use the Inset 30 and have had no problems in 3+ years. I would suggest trying the Inset 30 despite the comments from your trainer

That’s interesting, because my trainer also told me to use the straight inset, but she said the people who need the inset 30 are either kids or adults who exercise and are very active (which it sounds like you are!)
