Removing the cannula

Sometimes I bleed quite a bit when I take them out but today was quite an adventure. Like an idiot I decided to change my site really quick while waiting in the drive thru line at Dunkin Donuts! Lol I just happened to notice at that exact time that my adhesive was almost completely loose and, well since I had time on my hands… The set change went fine and then, like an idiot, RIP I pulled the old one out, expecting the same amount of blood as usual. To my surprise, it was a “gusher” as Kristin put it. And I could not find a napkin in sight! I quickly put my left hand over my stomach to hold off as much as I could. I had to pull up to the drive thru window and pay and take my coffee with my right hand, while trying very hard to hide my blood-covered left hand. It was quite an adventure. Then I had to run in to work really quick and rinse my shirt and pants off because I couldn’t completely save them  To make matters worse, I was getting coffee for a coworker as well and I had to go up to him with his coffee in my wet shirt  I explained the story to him and I’m not sure how much he enjoyed his coffee after that lol! We live, we learn!

Changing sites in a car while at a drive through? Wow! It literally takes me at least 30 min to do a site change!!! And you do this with which infusion set?

Wow! What a story. I guess gushers come at the worst time sometimes!

I use the adhesive remover when I take my cannula out. I have no problems at all. Except the occasional bleeders and the ones that seems to even have blood in the line.

I too still passout at blood draws and iv’s—sometimes it is close when I give myself a shot or when inserting a sensor–at least I don’t pass out at the site if a syringe anmore

They’ll get faster, John. I remember when it took me 15-20min. Now I can do it in under 5, easy. I’ve changed my sets in some really weird places, too. Moving cars, movie theater hallways, under the table at restaurants, on boats, standing in a crowded amusement park, behind the organ during a church service (that was on Friday)…

Maybe He’ll get the coffee now. He should rather than take a chance,LOL. I am glad I have never had one that bad, knock on wood.

I use insets. I was only changing the infusion set, not the entire cartridge, etc., so it didn’t take me quite as long as the whole process would have but I was pretty impressed with myself…until I bled out lol!

I wish he would! I seem to be the official Dunkin Donuts runner. Apparently even the thought of blood in their coffee isn’t enough to make lazy people not lazy

I use adhesvie remover wipes that my GP provides me with, I don’t have any problems either, other than the occassional bleed, they either bleed, and bleed well, or don’t bleed at all. I do sometimes get uncomfortable pains where I have just taken a cannula out.

Usually just loosen and pull:) If I have let it in a tad longer (note big smile here), I do use neosporin on the site. Use the QuickSets…found that the adhesive really makes a difference to me…used to get reddened, bleed, irritated, etc. Tried everything…and then switched sets…problem gone:) I leave my sites in longer and they are not reddened when I remove the cannula. Sometimes have a bump, but gone in a day or so.

I just loosen the adhesive and pretty much rip them up if I am using the quick sets. If using the sure-t’s (which I pretty much am all the time - still have a few quick sets), I am a little more careful by loosening the adhesive and lifting out.

Hi, Myriam! I’m late to the party on this one, but I just joined TuDiabetes and I’m very familiar with your experience. I’ve been using a pump for about 12 years and I’ve found that, in most cases when I get bleeding on removing the cannula, it’s because I’d gone through a vein when I inserted the darn thing in the first place. I know because I always insert them manually and can feel when I’m penetrating a vein (I think veins have nerve bundles around them). I usually shift sites when I encounter a vein, but if I push through the pain because I’m in a hurry or whatever I often have a bleeding site when I take the cannula out a couple of days later.

I always rip it off. No point in wasting time :stuck_out_tongue:
