So I'm going to be starting insulin therapy

This reminds me of the meme that says something like “I had a medical emergency, but I had a cupcake. I’m okay now.”

I got a humalog pen that dispenses half unit increments. It is handy more often than you would think. It is called the Luxura HD I think.

Thanks so much for all of the replies. I really appreciate all of the feedback. I’m currently reading “Think Like a Pancreas” and have “Using Insulin” ready to go also. I’m just so relieved that I start insulin next week (a little nervous) but I think I can manage.

I will also be asking for mealtime insulin (as Brian suggested). I have no control with mealtime BG and have numbers in 280 range with small amounts of carbs (5-10) and I’m pretty sure the Met and Gliclazide dont help much with mealtime highs. I just want to add some more carb options because I work out and run regulary and I know I’m not getting enough energy for this.

I will post how my day went next Tuesday.

Thanks gain… Paul

You are doing what every conscientious diabetic needs to do: learning how this complicated beast functions and how to take control of it. As you’ve probably figured out by this time, to control diabetes effectively you need to become your own personal expert. Not only does nobody else know your body like you do, no one else is there 24x7 to do it.

The good news is that you can control it. Just takes work and education. Keep up the great work and let us know how it’s going!

I also was originally diagnosed as a type 2 and taking insulin but I took lantus (by pen) and Humalog at mealtime I have since realized that LADA is a form of type 1 after attending a TCOYD conference. I asked my endocrinologist for a C-peptide test (measures how much insulin is made by your pancreas) well mine is making almost none. Yep type 1 They want me to go to a pump but I’m not sure yet. I’m pretty happy with the V-go disposable pump that I fill every 24 hours with no tubing. The lessons that I’ve learned is that knowledge is power and you really do have to be your own advocate.
