Students with diabetes® announces national internship program

STUDENTS WITH DIABETES® ANNOUNCES NATIONAL INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

Tampa (October 1, 2012) - Undergraduate and graduate students living with Type 1 Diabetes will be able to learn leadership skills through a new national internship, created by Students With Diabetes®and led by Nicole Johnson, MA, MPH, Miss America 1999.

Nicole Johnson founded the Students With Diabetes Internship Program™ to develop and train undergraduate and graduate students living with T1D (Type 1 Diabetes) to become the next generation of leaders in the diabetes community. Johnson is Executive Director of the "Bringing Science Home" initiative at USF Health at the University of South Florida, which fosters national initiatives to improve the lives of anyone living with a chronic illness.

The Students With Diabetes Internship Program™ will introduce young adults living with T1D to professional opportunities within the diabetes community. The goal is to foster professional development and provide young adults living with T1D the business and life skills necessary for a successful career in diabetes.

"I wish I had access to this type of program when I was a young adult," Johnson said. "Not only will the program offer young adults exceptional professional opportunities, but it will also provide them unmatched experience to learn from and be mentored by leaders in the diabetes community."

Internships will be offered in a variety of business sectors functioning in diabetes including non-profit management, sales, marketing, clinical research, communications, technology, publishing and advocacy/government affairs. Internship awards and placements will be announced on March 15, 2013. Those awarded internships are required to attend the Students With Diabetes Leadership Training Academy May 29-30, 2013. This conference will teach interns business communication skills, grassroots advocacy skills, leadership training and tips on how to succeed in their internship. This opportunity will also be open to a limited number of non-intern participants. The conference will be held in St. Petersburg, FL on the campus of the University of South Florida immediately preceding the 2013 Students With Diabetes National Conference.
