A while ago I was at around 160 and thought a shower might help get my sugar down a little. Bad idea. When I got out of the shower I was around 180 and quite frustrated. Has anyone else had problems with their sugar going up after a shower?
Some people’s blood sugars drop in the shower (if they change at all) due to increased bloodflow from the heat. So my guess would be that, most likely, your blood sugar was already on the rise. Do you take shots or use a pump, what had you eaten, etc? If you were a pumper that disconnected for half an hour, you’d see a rise, but you’d likely see it longer after the shower and not right after. Whether you use injections or a pump, it could be a reaction from the last meal you ate.
No, but it usually goes done after a hot shower
Mine will usually spike after a shower…but I’m pretty sure it’s die to me removing my pump. Are you on a pump?
Nope. Mine is usually the same or slightly lower. Often it’s hard to tell what the cause is (other than the obvious things) because you can’t tell if BG may be on its way up or down anyway.
Actually…its the reverse. Hot shower lowers my blood sugar.
My BG’s don’t change at all with showers…as a matter of fact I’ve never heard of that happening and think its pretty interesting!
The only time I do rise around a shower is if I unhook my pump, so I don’t do that anymore.
Even if I were to take the “missing basal” in advance of my shower I’d still rise so I just got one of those plastic things you can stick to the shower wall, which I stick on the far wall, and put my pump in there while showering. I haven’t had any problems with it getting wet, my BG’s are happy and I use the super long tubing so I don’t have many issues with getting tangled up in the tubing.
Have you ever checked your BG 3 or 4 times from the same finger stick. Depending on your meter, it can easily vary 20 points. Or it may be DP kicking in.
Yup! When I take a shower… no matter the time of day etc… I get a spike of 30 to 40 points higher. I guess we’re rare; but it does happen.

Nah, I’m still on shots. A pump would be nice, but I’m not sure if I want one just yet.
My bg also rises by about 20 points when I shower. It rises by about 10 points when I floss and another 10 points when I brush my teeth. However, I don’t have any evidence that flossing, brushing my teeth or showering MAKES my bg go up. I happen to do all these things right after I get up in the morning. My CGM shows me that the second I get out of bed my bg starts rising for about half an hour. My bg rises no matter what I do. I consider it a side effect of getting up. The bg rise after I get out of bed is steady. I cannot tell when I switched from one activity to another. My bg rise does not seem to be impacted by the nature of my morning activities.
I had to do this. I tested just before and then right after my shower. I’m a pumper by the way… and my bg dropped 3 points. I do know that 30 min. in the hot tub will drop my bg’s (no I don’t take my pump with me in the hot tub!) by anywhere from 10-20 points. I usually always have snacks available when I tub it !
Yes! My blood sugar spikes when I take a long (>20 min) hot shower. I noticed it when I started using my Dexcom CGM. When I take a shower first thing in the morning, which I probably only do about once or twice a week, I’ll get a ~40 mg rise in BG that starts in the middle of the shower, rises rapidly, and falls just as rapidly within 20-30 minutes of getting out of the shower. I don’t generally feel the rapid rise, but I definitely feel the rapid drop afterward.
When I don’t shower in the morning, my BG rises slowly after I wake up - probably up 10 in the first half hour or so before I eat breakfast.
Interesting. My son goes slightly down in a shower.
Like you, his BG rises slowly after getting up though.
