I am so sorry Judith. There is no shame in being a diabetic and I wished I knew more about my paternal side. I did let my siblings know of my condition. My sister may develop it still and her kids may be 2x as likely. My diagnosis may have gone unnoticed if not for my OB-Gyn that caught glucose in my urine twice. I’m glad she screened like she did.
I know @1DebY…I sort of lucked into my dx, too—in that I was getting ready for surgery and there were all the battery of tests they do, and there it was. She turned out to be a not very great doc and I replaced her, but I am forever thankful that she caught it early for me!..Blessings…
My diagnosis was by accident, too. I had what turned out to be a fairly routine staph infection. The doc I saw didn’t “like the looks of it,” so sent me for a glucose test “just in case.” BG was 309, but probably had nothing to do with the infection, which healed so quickly that it was gone by the time the test results came back from the lab!
Yes, that is true (that high BG can lower immune system); however, in this case, I think it was unlikely that the BG contributed much to the problem. The infection started at a scratch that I hadn’t noticed (much) or treated (at all). Healing preceded normally before I ever treated the diabetes. Regardless of the presence or absence of any impact on my immune system at the time, the diagnosis was real and correct.
I have a sister that doesn’t make the best choices and she has complications. I so get what you are saying. And you are right. Her life, her choices. I work hard to keep on track and do my best and make those same gentle suggestions are mention a success – but she isn’t interested. She is using a cane and has problems and I wish I had a magic wand to help. I think you have the right attitude.
Out of the blue, my 63 year old brother joined a gym! He signed up for a few sessions with a personal trainer who he seems to trust. I sent him money to help pay for more sessions.
Hopefully my brother has found the inspiration to make the self-care changes he needs this time. Fingers crossed.
