To put this photo in perspective. I was at my computer this morning and started to feel a little weird. I checked the Dexcom and it said 97 with an angled down arrow. Thinking maybe I was getting low I washed and dried my hands and grabbed the meter that was next to the computer - the Freestyle Freedom. Seeing 161 was a bit of a shock and something I would ordinarily bolus for. So I grabbed the PDM and something made me stop before entering the number. I didn't feel 161 so I checked using the same finger and just got the blood flowing again. Then I got 82. Just to get myself completely confused I grab the Freestyle Lite meter and checked that getting 118. It's a shame that the Freestyle meters are supposedly the most accurate of all the meters.
I have never seen such large anomalies between different meters.
I use two meters, the Accu-Chek Performa and cross check with the Optium Xceed. I have been told by an Accu-Chek rep not to take BGL close to computers because you can get false reading. I have found humidity or moisture contaminated Performa test strips will give abnormally high readings and Optium strips left in the sun or high temperatures to long, giving exceptionally low readings. If I have an unusual reading, I always recheck then cross check with the Optium.
That being said, I also see big differences between the two meters. If I am having a fast falling hypo the Optium will always read lower but if the hypo is slow falling and/ or I have very little insulin on board, both meters will have similar readings. After I have eaten and BGL are rising fast, the Optium reading will be higher. As a Sugar Chemist, I could give an explanation, if sugars, especially glucose, dissolve in the blood and react exactly the same way as they do in water but I no longer have access to a lab to prove my theory. I am now taking BGL with both meters prior and after blood is taken for my 3 monthly blood test and finding a similar trend.
Yeah rick I agree, I am thrilled a big company like Google has gotten involved. As I have semi-joked before if Bill Gate's or Steve Jobs kid had T1 we would already have an implantable AP or failing that a pump the size of an ear bud phone.
Clare, I take the average of my two one touch meters and settle on it. Usually my two meters are pretty close, within 5 points so I usually take the average or if they are far apart the one I want.
You and I got started with urine testing and anything is better than that mess. Who ever thought of that needed a major mind adjustment.
I figure these crazy blood variations sure beat Urine testing and are the best we have until the tear drop sample of the contact lens.
