To all of you in the 5% club

I am a low carb T2 not on insulin, so I have no backup for eating carby meals. In my experience so called diabetic recipes are non starters, for me, too many carbs. Try searching for low carb recipes instead. Here's a good low carb site for starters. There are several low carb recipe groups here on tuD including this one.

Ha you crack me up acidrock..

Thanks for the links will check them out..

I am always broiling some jalapenos to toss in stuff to make it livlier...

Over time, I am bothered less and less about the things I used to eat. And while I also have a core of my food that is meat, seafood, dairy and non-starchy veggies, I have also developed much more of a portfolio of things to eat. Mostly through taking ownship of where the food I eat comes from. I now do the shopping and make the meals in my household. And while low carb recipes are a good source, I actually like to adapt recipes from sites like epicurious.com and eat like a king. After all, if food is my medicine, as a diabetic I should probably expect I will need to spend more on my medicine.

You can still love and enjoy food, you just need to cultivate the goodness and variety in foods that you choose to eat.

I can't really say that I have found a food that doesn't improve with Sriracha.

I'm also liking the more Mexican oriented sauce, w/ Habaneros and carrots, various varieties. Toss in a little bit, yummy...last week, we had some pan fried salmon filets on (9G of carb...) toast with pico de gallo sauteed w/ spinach (in the pan before the fish...) and mustard, probably like 15G of carbs and they were really awesome! Part of me would have enjoyed some french fries, tater tots, jambalaya or other goodies...

Ha, well I have just ordered a bottle from an Asian cookshop.. Have to see what all the fuss is about ;)

Think you are right there..

I definitely need to expand my portfolio, will start looking at some recipes and see if I can find something new every week.

Cheers BSC.

Ar, please enlighten me on the names of the other two sauces. Sriracha is a staple, but I'm always looking to add another condiment to the frig. :)

We just worked on basal rates, and are so happy with the results. Lately son had been raising up about 4 hours after dinner, right after were all in bed and would stay at the top of his range til morning. Figuring out how to to deal with 150 with no time to pre-bolus on a school morning was getting real frustrating, but had to carve out time to do it. His A1C was 6.5 two weeks ago and so I knew I really had to get on it, specially when his Endo actually suggested we raise it. Ha Ha.

Hi Buckley,
You spawned some great discussion. I"ve worn a pump x 6 mos so I'm a newbie too. I really do believe in the "Law of Small Numbers", and of course log better bgs when I'm following it, but I also like your King's X blow out meal idea. I can especially say so because I just had a blow out breakfast. I felt pretty smug considering the high carbs, when my 1 hr bg was 198. That was short lived because my 2 hr bg was 268. But I did enjoy the treat, and Tomorrow's Another Day.
My first A1C on the pump was 6.4%. A year ago, I would have been ecstatic, but like you, now I am obsessing to get into the 5-club. Trouble is, if I hit 200, I feel like a major failure. Hell, I used to top 200 regularly on MDI and was happy with a 7.2%!
So back to Dr. B's recommendations I go. Meanwhile, I'll bet the farm on the fact that nobody gets a 5 w/o living in the Low Zone plenty! Come on, you guys, fess up!

Not sure either what you consider a low, (I don't count anything over 60) or what you consider "plenty", but my last A1C was 5.7 and I don't think I "live in the low zone plenty". Hand over that farm..lol

Help me out here, AR... Like Dr. B, you say you hang out in the 80s "all day". I just don't get it. Whether on MDI or the pump, eating less than 30-50 carbs/day, I don't "hang out" anywhere. My bs is constantly going up or going down. Law of small numbers is irrefutable imho in that my swing can be much tighter, but the fact remains that my bs never hangs out. My 24 hour avg carb/insulin ratio is 9.8 and my insulin sensitivity is 85. My avg TDI is I think 21 units. Why don't I "hang"?

Hi Buckley,

No reason why you shouldn't have a biscuit. Just have a small but really nice one rather than a giant one.

What Zoe said, Cindy you just lost the farm twice! I am the ridiculous coveted club and have been in it for years and not the Low Zone plenty one.

AR, just curious...and also to those on pumps and MDI's with low A1C's, what do you typically aim for in terms of your fasting numbers...how do you stay at low numbers and then not go low when really active? thanks!

Ha maybe I shouldn't have mentioned the club..

Would have been better to say "To all those who maintain HbA1cs under 6%, how do you do it?"

No lows today for the first time in ages stayed between 65-100 all day, well I can't be sure of that as I don't have CGM, but all my tests have been in the green zone.. Dr B does know his stuff.

i am starting to agree with this and believe this (what dennis posted)...does our body know the difference between an 80 fasting or staying at a safe 120's, etc...does our body do any better with an A1C at 5%+ or staying at a really safe 6.3 - 6.5%, even my Endo said it doesn't really matter that much. It is true to the more stable one is, whether it's 130 all day long versus highs - lows, etc..which often isn't reflected in that A1C, as it's just an average, is easier on our bodies, every endo i've seen has said this.

and the longer we have to go with the disease, those 60's aren't safe. guess it depends too when that 60 - 65 hit, is it right after you just bolused, knowing you've drop and still have a lot IOB..or is it waking up...or is that 60 - 65 in the middle of the night when you know your basal hasn't kicked in fully yet. I push it too with low BG's...my lowest in October was 6.1% but I did have lows...now it's up to 6.7% as my insulin needs have increased. I hope to get back to 6.1 - 6.2% that works fine for me. I don't think I'd attempt anything below a 6% (not sure, maybe it would be different on the pump and easier)..i'm pretty active and I just don't want to always bottom out and then eventually lose my ability to feel hypos. 60's aren't normal blood sugars, over time..continued low blood sugars can cause brain damange...tis true!

i don't hang out at any particular number either, don't know how it's even possible unless one is doing corrections all day long; simple movement, breathing, food, stress, exercise..all effects our blood sugars, as it does with non d's too..it's a moving target.
