hi everyone... i continue to improve with my blood sugars on the pump. the other night though, i ate pasta (a lot of pasta) and my blood sugars were crazy all through the night. i took the correct amount of insulin for it but then at 2am my sugar was 340. i corrected that sugar and then at 4:30am i felt awful thirsty and peeing a ton and just felt miserable so i tested again out of curiousity. itw as 589!!!!! how did that happen? so i corrected that and have been ok since. im assuming it was the pasta i ate?
I have found the best way to deal with pasta is to use a Dual Wave bolus. I make it last for 6 hours, and it just about covers it. I don't know how much pasta you ate, or what kind of sauce you had on it, but I generally use 2-3 units of insulin over 6 hours. If you had a lot of fat in the sauce, you might need more insulin.
I like mac and cheeese, a southern staple that abounds during the holidays. when I have as much as 3/4 cup ) a "lot" for me... I bolus 1.5 the amount needed from the bolus wizard for me and use a dual wave for 6 yours. I check my sugars at 2, 3, hours to make sure I am not spiking too high... I may even have to redo the booous and add another .5 to 1 unit to the mix to keep the spike aeay from the high carb high fat mix. eedless to say, I gtry to avoid mac and cheese as much as I like it, because it is just TOO much work to bolus for. Will probably have some over the holidays at a family dinners; but then maybe not, because I do not want to put that much work in when I am playing with my little nieces and nephews and visiting with friends and family post-meal.
God bless,
Brunetta
Typos: I meant "6 Hours", "redo ther boluses" and "Needless to say" and "try to avoid"
Thanks both of you for your advice. im still new to this and keep forgetting about being able to do that with my pump. I did eat more than usual pasta and i just put margarine on it for sauce. Im getting there are appreciate your advice!
I too have that problem with pasta and rice,( rice seems to be the killer for me). I'm still on shots r and n. I usually have to take a shot before and after the meal and also recheck in 2 hours just to make sure my bs isn't going up. Now I just try to stay away from pasta or rice but its really hard, its just taste so good!!!
Last night I had a hot dog and a cup of soup, later a brownie all bolused for. Later check bs, 326 at 9pm. Took correction and at 3am, 231. Took another correction and got up with a 134. It takes work and is hard to explain most of the time.
