Victoza fixed my BS!

Ok, I’m only two days into this medication but it feels like a miracle. I am a T1D for 23 yrs and was in very good control until about 2 yrs ago. For 2 years now I have been looking at a frightening trend line that liked to stay in the 200-300’s. Despite rigorous monitoring of food intake, exercise and countless adjustments of my basal and bolus settings- good control or even mildly decent control has eluded me. Until now!!

As I write this I am in total disbelief over how well this medication has “calmed my system down” as my CDNE likes to say. I went to a new endo last Friday who prescribed Victoza to me after hearing my explanation of what I believe is going on with my BS. I ex

Victoza is a once a day injection that suppresses our glucagon production. So say goodbye to the “dawn effect”! No more creeping up of the BS overnight. And for those of us who seem resistant to insulin at times, then unpredictably drop like crazy followed by the inevitable bounce… Well, that’s what this medication works on, all of that secreting of glucagon that has nothing to do with our eating. It doesn’t completely turn off glucagon production, just calms it down so we can stay in the normal range so much more of the time.

My trend line on the cgm went from looking like the Himalayas to a nice flat line on the LOWER end of the normal range. And it was immediate! I have already lowered my basal rate a bit across the board because I don’t need it to fix my body’s tendency to have climbing BS at various different times of the day.

This is so shocking I still can’t believe it. It also curbs the appetite and has been shown to cause weight loss. This is simply the next best thing to a cure.

All I know is that if this is a dream, I don’t want to wake up!

I'm really glad to see that Victoza helped. Bernstein has been using Byetta and Victoza with his T1 patients for some time with good success. Clearly it helps slow/control digestion and cuts appetite. I've wondered whether it helps gastroparesis. Byetta and Victoza worked really well for me, almost magically, but only for about 2 weeks. Bernstein says that his experience is that the drugs lose effect in 3-6 months, so he has his patients rotate.

I'm really pleased to hear of your success. Please keep us up to date on how things go.

I love this drug, too!!! I am T2 and struggled with weight gain. I have been on it about 15 months. Mt weight tumbled down in the first couple months, but it got me to a place where I started to take it from there with exercise and (mostly) healthy eating. I have lost near 60lbs, and feeling so much better. Victoza changed my life. Who knows what long term effects, like my lowered A1C and other numbers, I can contribute to Victoza, and what is the result of my weight loss and healthier lifestyle? I do know Victoza started it all.
