You sure can yesterday I did 300 calories on the elliptic machine and another 200 calories on the bench press. Without a bite of carbs during or before or after the exercise and on a very low carb diet for about 2 weeks. The BG was normal before, during and after the exercise. My liver spews out tons of glucose so it must make it from protein and fat.
I can only think of alcohol that is not turned into glucose but acetaldehyde (somewhat toxic). Other foods have to go glucose or strait out the bottom.
Dr. Bernstein said he ran for miles on a low carb diet. May be he cheated in this case and stopped for milk shake every mile. Just kidding.
It seems to me the Atkins diet is not healthy with its emphasis on meat, meat, meat and banning even fruits. I can’t see how eating a bacon-double-cheeseburger with no bun is a heart healthy meal.
I think that many cultures all over the world have healthy diets that are relatively high in carbs (for example, the Mediterranean diet), but they eat less processed and fast food than Americans. It’s so hard to know what kind of additives and chemicals we are actually ingesting with commercially prepared foods and how these react in the body.
If you don’t report me to the Atkins police I will admit that I ate a whole kiwi this morning and had a small bowl of home made fruit salad yesterday and ate 2 tangerines the day before.
I never ate at the arches before diabetes, during diabetes and if there is a cure, not after diabetes.
Med diet? in the 1970 Encyclopedia Britanica the Greeks ate 600 calories a day of olive oil each on average, that is pretty Atkins. May be the other 500 calories is feta cheese or fish.
The 1,000,000 man made chemicals we released into the environment in the last 100 years do worry me.
If by complex carb diet we mean bread then no it is not a suitable food for diabetics because it is pure instantanious blood sugar. And without a new pancreas I will not touch.
In recent years the Greeks are still eating 600 calories of olive oil per day. With feta and fish , olives tomatoes and cucumber it is a very healthy very low carb diet. atkins would be proud.
I doubt followign his ideas would have prevented diabetes. However, following his ideas and philosophy now that you have diabetes IMHO is of great benefit. A low carb diet for the management of diabetes has proven to me to have helped. When I was first Dx, my blood sugar was 309. I attended a one-on-one class with a dietitian who recommended 60 grams of carbs per meal per day, and 15-20 grams of carbs for snacks. My blood sugars rose higher than when I was DX. I took matters into my own hands and started the Dr. Atkins approach. At DX, I was put on 3 pills, metformin, actos and glipizide. I started walking everyday for 15, min, then 30, and now 60 minutes. My last A1C was 5.6, and I’m now controlling with diet and exercise. So, I can say that following Dr. Atkins has done some good for me. Ellie…new to the board
Congratulations on your A1c & doing this on diet & exercise. Fantastic!
Like everyone else, I was given the same diet for death. I was eating less carbs before being diagnosed!
Maybe one day dieticians, doctors, CDEs & the too powerful ADA will get with the times. Hey, I can dream, right?Until then, our health is our own hands.
I follow my common sense meal plan , please note I do not use the word DIET …have for a long , long time , to include a variety of foods : complex carbs, protein and fat and above all EXERCISE …all this takes planning and it is paying off : slim , stable at 137 pounds, 5 feet 6 1/2 inches , close to 70 years of age. And I am able to allow for the occasional food treat .Try to motivate others to do same by participating with Team Diabetes Canada in full and half marathons, 10 k walks .Did Dr. Atkins include chapters in his book about exercise ???
The proportion of overweight and obese people and kids would be far less , if we move our bodies instead of watch TV, play games on the computer etc…my mind is simple and so is my solution .
Canada’s Food guide , 2007 , is different from the US pyramid …depicts a rainbow , carbs such as whole wheat pasta are mentioned are second next to fruits and vegetables followed by milk products , then protein, including important information about oils and fats. And I love fish , so does hubby …To view the food guide visit www.hc-sc.gc .
The Canada food guide is ok I suppose if you skip the bread-grain part entirely and supplement with the other groups. 100 grams of starchy stuff in addition to what is in the veggies and fruits my body cannot process any more and injecting prodigious amounts of insulin will result in a body weighting 500 lb. The carbs in the veggies and occaisional fruit I can handle with difficulty.
Could possibly do 1/2 marathon by bicycle. running is out of the question as it would destroy my knees. The old saying that elephants must not jump is true and may also apply to obese diabetics. Did run 1/2 marathon in my late 20’s. That is great that you can run marathons keep it up.
If I can finish my tax forms I intend to spend 1/2 day in the gym see if one can loose weight.
Thanks Anthony …yes I plan to keep on moving …and we are all so different with this chronic disease …for me it works : approx. 23 u of insulin daily and about 190 grams of carbs ( complex) .
I think, this is why the medical and non- medical people have not figured it all out .
What would you recommend I eat for Lunch , if I were to stop eatng one of my favourite breads called Silver Hills Balanced bread-made without flour, one slice 18 grams of carb , fiber 5 grams and I consume 2 slices at lunch ( the kind Canada Food Guide recommends and low glycemic index ) ??? By the way , I do not get a cut, because I advertized their bread on this blog , ha, ha …maybe I should … You mentioned supplement with the other groups …for instance ??
What do you eat on an average day ??
Please visit www.silverhills.com , when you are ready .I have lots of questions and am ready to learn !!
PS I am in awe , that you are doing your tax forms already .
Wow. That is very little insulin for so many carbs. The bread sounds really yummy and I am very unhappy on a no bread diet. If I ate 2 slices of bread I would not be able to get my BG below 9 for most of the rest of the day. So I do not know what to do eat “healthy according to the food guide” and suffer really high BG or eat to try to control BG with very low carb. I can manage many readings in the 7 and below range far from perfect but better than 9. My wife used to make a “diabetic friendly bread” by coarse grinding rye kernels with a bit of Nanton stone ground whole grain flour as a binder. Strange that Silver hills can make theirs without any flour at all.
Supplements: vitamin D, B complex and extra B-12 and some vitamin C on occaision. with a multivatamin twice a week. I had my vitamin D measured at the end of last May and it was found to be deficient. The others I have no idea if they are really needed.
A low bread lunch would be a can of sardines or smoked trout eaten on slices of tomato, bell pepper, celery or in a salad with lettuce.
I think I have achieved the worst kind of diabetes insulin deficient and insulin resistant. Makes it hell to lose weight and very difficult to control blood sugar and the constant threat of balloning to 500 lb or death whichever comes first.
A correction in my previous message ( probably shows my almost total not so being aware of computer knowledge ) …www.silverhillsbakery.ca is the website : NOT www.silverhills.com , which I think takes you to diamonds …Please FORGIVE .Is the bread available in Alberta …I am sure a big market ?? I will connect with the person , that includes my community in his territory .
Anthony , as I said before …we are all so different with treatment etc. etc. with this horrific disease .
I truly wish you well , including all people with diabetes. I have been invited by the CDA to visit our politicians in Victoria , BC and on the Hill , Ottawa…within the next 4 months and like to sign off tonight with : recipient of the CDA’s 2008 Volunteer of the Year Award.
When I was diagnosed in 1983 and hospitalized for 5 days to learn how to give insulin etc. etc. the doctor decided to put me on total of 45 u ( my weight , height , food intake ) and I promptly had a scary low during the night for the first time in my life . Probably a good /safe place to experience this ??..Prior to going on the pump in 2001 my total was to 27 u …part of the insulin was then used to lower highs . Most people require more insulin at 4 am ( dawn effect ??)…my basal setting at 4 am is less than at 12 am and 6 am …Another observation : I require just a bit more insulin , when the temp. is below freezing …even if I eat same amount of carbs as in over 80 degree weather …pumping makes this easier to adjust .
Ingredients noted on the Squirrelly SilverHills bread bag: organic whole sprouted wheat, raisin juice, sesame seeds, water, sunflower seeds, vital wheat gluten, barley malt, yeast , sea salt …85 percent organic ingredients …I could not even begin to " home make " this ; no surprse that this one is called SQUIRRELY and they have other breads available as well ( Flax, Balance ) .
It is most likely a good idea to take a multi vitamin . I have not had my result of the Vit. D test back …I am on 1000 IU daily …have osteoporosis …happy( tongue in cheek ) side effect of type 1 diabetes and have been told type 2 at risk as well .Lack of sunshine in winter too …
Hang in there …one day at the time .
I believe it’s a bit more complicated than simply high fat, low carb, verses high carb, low fat. I personally feel that Atkins was a misguided quack… just my opinion, of course. If you look at a composite of the most successful methods of treating type two diabetes, like Drs. John McDougall, Dean Ornish, Joel Fuhrman, and Neal Barnard promote, you will see a common thread.
By now, you probably have figured out that I advocate a high nutrition, low carb, medium fat diet. It’s not whether the calories are from fat or carbs… it’s whether the food brings with it the essential nutrients that allow our bodies to properly utilize those calories most effectively. Also, whether our bodies are getting enough exercise to adequately stimulate our systems to burn off the excess. In other words, balance.
I agree with you I cannot do Atkins I love the fruits. Not sure that carbs are needed for energy. Eating a high carb diet my BG will be way too high and I do not feel that much better. I would love to eat carbs. Bread regardless of fibre content is pure blood sugar and skyrockets my BG.
Our native people were much healthier and much more vigorous in the old days when they had very little carbs to eat. and they probably did not have a 20% or more incidence of diabetes.
You don’t need much vitamin C to prevent scurvy you figure that they are smart enough to pop a pill. The natives out east chewed spruce tar to get some vitamin C. They had some agriculture.
In Alberta hard to see what they did. I suppose they tried to find as many Saskatoon berries as possible and pound them with buffalo meat and dry this for winter.
May be this is something to rejuvenate BC pulp industry make food where the carbs don’t digest.
