I’m the same as you Sheryl with not having applied for any rewards. Maybe one day.
Figure we may as well! If there was some monetary award to go along with the 50 yr diploma - that would be a great impetus!!!
This is a great idea!
Well…we tried. But we haven’t been able to cure it in a 100 years, and it’s probably never gonna happen. So we aren’t gonna try anymore! We will just give you all a yearly rebate instead!
I was 9 yrs old - both my sister and I were told we likely wouldn’t live past 30 yrs. And look at us now! I know of no rewards at all - but I did get the Children with Diabetes gold medal (think it’s made of bronze!)!
I need to apply for these things! I got Lilly necklaces and that’s all. Blessings and congrats to you!My sister has diabetes as well but she is mad at us (for no reason) and I no longer know how she is.
Am Canadian here - my sister and I keep in contact but as our Mom just died not too long ago we’ve lost our connection a bit.
I just received my Joslin 50 year medal. They are really nice people over there and not too strict when it comes to proof. My records from Stanford were probably long ago buried out behind the barn. My current doc wrote me a letter stating my longevity with the disease. At first it was a little depressing to think I had gone THAT many years dealing with the crap that is type 1 (and here was this medal representing that)
Then I had friends congratulating me for being so tenacious, so I had a change of attitude and thought…how COOL is this?!?!
Oh congrats to you! How awesome.
I actually just wrote a reminder to try to pursue this this coming week. Very cool on your change in how you were feeling about it!
Joslin is a great organization.
I hope they will eventually publish something like, “Aging with T1D” based on their research. (I sure haven’t been able to find anything.)
65 yrs here.
Wow, congrats and blessings!
Wow Marilyn - how great for you!!! Well done, keep it going.
60 for me.
I don’t really see the value in the medal, though I imagine I will apply to get in their database. Actually I should already be in their database since I’ve been going to Joslin for the last eight years or so after my previous more local endo retired. Boston is a short trip for me. I actually went to a Joslin endo a couple times in the 80’s. I also went to Joslin in the 80’s to try to volunteer to participate in the DCCT test, but was disqualified.
What I am quite interested in, is that there used to be a meeting of the medalists at Joslin. I thought it was done annually, but I may be making that up. Richard157 posted a pic of a meeting of 50 or so medalists he attended in 2011. I would definitely like to attend a meeting of other 50-year-plussers! I will be eligible for the first time early next year. Can anyone confirm or deny whether this meeting actually is or was held annually, and whether it survived Covid?
You’re both amazing!!! As a T1D since 1971, I know what it’s like too. You’ve done great work taking care of yourselves. Well done!!!
There was first TCOYD conference about ten years ago. It still is done with on-line after Covid. Not sure if they still do in person every year.
TCOYD Take care of your diabetes
Many online presentations have been posted.
The bi-annual meeting survived COVID. The next event is April 26, 2025 from 8:30AM to 4:30PM at Joslin Diabetes Center – Lecture Hall, One Joslin Place, Boston. Suggest you contact brenda.goodell at joslin.harvard.edu (substitute @ for “at”)
