A few problems with the Minimed 722

I have had a few problems with my Minimed pump over the past week. It's a bummer because I'm a big Minimed fan-- I have had a Minimed since 1992 and I can't imagine life without it!! I don't know if I've just had bad luck with the 722 model, but I'm on my second one and am having mechanical problems with it. I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced these problems...

It all started while my husband and I were on our way to NJ the night before Thanksgiving. When we got in the car, I checked my bg and it was fine-- somewhere in the neighborhood of 85, I believe. Two hours later, when we were on the road, I was feeling pretty tired, so I checked again. I was up to 220 or something, so I unclipped my pump from my jeans, to bolus. The screen was blank!! I unscrewed the battery and then the pump rebooted itself (counting sequentially upward) and then gave me a "Batt Out Limit." I cleared that alarm and then re-set the time, because it was 2 hours behind!

I called Medtronic and told them what happened. The customer rep said that she thought an electrostatic discharge ("ESD") had caused the pump to lose power. She said sending me a new pump would not help, because all pumps could get ESD from time to time, if you touch the pump and "shock" it after you walk across carpet or get in an upholstered car or something. I had never heard of that, but I thought it made sense. She recommended I change the battery. Overall, she made it sound like it was pretty uncommon, so I didn't think I'd have any more problems.

Then, the other night, I went to the gym as usual and ran on the treadmill, and then I came home and ate a pretty small dinner. When I went to bed around 11:15pm, my bg was 98. I did not need to bolus or do anything with my pump, so I didn't even look at it. I woke up at 3:30am feeling nauseated, thirsty, and horrible (ugh, we all know that feeling!). I checked my bg and it was REALLY high. I immediately panicked, and grabbed my pump, thinking I would either bolus or change my site. Imagine my horror when I realized the PUMP SCREEN WAS BLANK!! I unscrewed the battery cap to replace the battery, and as I was unscrewing it, numbers counting sequentially showed up on the screen, one by one. Then I got a "Batt Out Limit," and then the time and other icons finally appeared on the screen. My pump thought that the time was just before 11pm, so I guess it had been out that long!

I grabbed the phone and called Medtronic, and luckily did not have to wait for a customer rep for very long, I guess because it was the middle of the night. I told the rep what happened, and she said she thought something was wrong with the battery cap, and that the cap must not be tight enough because something was preventing the battery from providing enough power. She had me inspect the pump, and asked me several questions about the battery area. She then sent two new battery caps and a new pump clip for me to use, which I received today. I replaced the battery cap, and at first I got a "weak battery" notification. I cleared that, and now everything is fine.

My husband keeps telling me I should call Medtronic again and request that they send a new pump. I don't know if that's necessary, but I don't want to keep having these problems. I was seriously panicking the other night when my bg was so high and the screen was blank!

If anyone else has had battery problems with a Minimed, I would really appreciate hearing about them and hearing what you did. I already had the A33 (or whatever it's called) issue that a lot of people have had, where the priming function is messed up and the sensor that primes the reservoir is broken-- that happened a few months ago, and Medtronic sent me a new pump. But now it's a battery problem. Sheesh!

I have the 712 and I had some problems with the battery cap. Similar issue, with the cap not being on tight enough. Unfortunately I ended up screwing it on too tight and couldn’t get it off, even with my husband’s help. Finally after an hour or so working on it, we finally got it off, but ended up damaging the cap. MiniMed sent me a new one and all was well.
The only other problem I had was with the pump buttons not working. Yea, that was a fun one. The up down and Act buttons didn’t respond consistantly. When I called with that issue, they sent a new pump the next day. I’m glad I listened to my Endo and kept a box of needles on hand for those situations.

Robert & Autumn, thanks for your input. I guess if you have had a pump for any length of time, then you have had some problems with it. Technology just isn’t perfect. :frowning:
I think I will request a new pump from Medtronic. I wonder if they will give me a hard time about sending me a new one… I’m under warranty with this one until Jan. 2009, I believe.
