A planned "wild and crazy weekend" just got wilder and crazier!

Wow! So sorry that this has happened to you. Good to hear that you are okay now.

Hi AR. I hope that the pump behaved itself for you at work today, and that the Wild and Crazy Weekend is settling down to a slightly tamer/saner normalcy. Wouldn’t want to take all the fun out of your daily life, though… Cheers.

How did it go with the NPH, did you take one or two shots a day? Did you bolus with novolog? too much to think about.

2 shots, I was staying up late partying, which always worked well. Then I biked about 40 miles Sunday and Monday, after running 10 and biking 10 on Saturday, although several of these were runs downtown to Quigley’s and Tangerine, followed by “scenic routes” home? 120 this AM and I was quite nervous until the "out for delivery note popped up! Then I ran 7 miles tonight too, as I’d gained about 5 lbs “chasing the dragon” all weekend.

My daughter just started pumping and they told us if the pump fails , to go back to Lantus. Take her basal rate of .3 x 24 hours and it comes up like 7.2 units of Lanuts (really just 7U) and continue with the Novolog for meals.
And then when we get a new pump to wait till its 24 hours since the last lantus dose and restart on old settings.

Did you have to eat tons while exercising? Sometimes I think I could exercise a ton on NPH, biking on the prarie path, walking 18 holes of gulf and no issues, but maybe I kept eating? I have a ton of lows while exercising on the pump. Love those restaurants, I ate at Jimmys this weekend, food not always the best but they did a great job with the salmon salad this weekend.

I usually have maybe 20-60G of carbs while I work out? I’m trying to work off of two bottles of gatorade, one 45G and one 10G of carbs, I buy the powdered stuff (cheaper) and mix it myself and have jelly beans in case i run low? It was really hot and humid Saturday, even though we ran @ 6:30 AM (on the Prairie Path!, Warrenville to Wheaton and back…) and I think I had about 20G of Jelly Beans, half the “high octane” and all of the low octane and refilled the low w/ water @ the drinking fountain in Wheaton. But then my pump blew up so I lost CGM data and, by the time I got home (Old Farm…) I was @ 260 between no insulin and post-running spike. That was before the NPH. I was testing about every 45 min all weekend after that, to keep up w/ the activities but any time it would hit like 120 I’d be like “I’d better walk the dog, something is going wrong” so she was happy!

It is so darn complicated this diabetes …and also happy to learn one can put up with the challenges if…one stays focused as YOU did …congrats…I think we all learned …THANKS buddy

You are certainly welcome Olympic Torch Bearer!!

A lot of the deal about running is that everyone is lugging some carbs, or at least water, along with them for the ride? Goo, Gatorade, fancier energy drinks, etc. I have several Goo packets I’ve picked up at races, “just in case” because I’m compulsive about not blowing off any free carbs but they are usually more than I’ve needed.

I’m running with a group from the local Running Store and they are always yelling (positively) bring your water. A lot of the more seasoned runners have various carb concoctions in their water. I’m always pleased to have seen people puking at just about every race I’ve run, even 5Ks and not to have been one of them! In some ways, I think that it could be somewhat advantageous to have a CGM and know when you need some carbs as opposed to straight people who can run into trouble or bonk and run out of energy and then their run ends up sort of screwed?

The pump behaved great at work, I can’t say I was entirely the same but a lot of people were out so I mostly talked to myself!

I’d add too that I seem to have a lot of good results if I have more smaller “hits” of carbs, like 10 every 2-3 miles of running or so? I used to bring Gatorade and water but tried putting like 10G of Gatorade powder in the water and it’s really refreshing when it’s like 95 out and also seems to help maintain my BG more usefully than the heavy duty stuff. Once I have 2/3 of the bottle of that, I don’t worry about my BG but, when I come home, usually run up. 5 jelly beans work better, although the Jewel has been out fo Starburst Jelly beans for a while! I hope they are not extinct!

Glad the pump behaved and didn’t talk back

Oy, I wish diabetes was as simple as walking the dog!!! Or maybe you are ON to something, and better start writing the next best-selling book on how to control (reverse??) diabetes!!

I did the opposite – took a friend out to a birthday lunch, and had a large egg, ham and cheese omelet, which was bad enough, but then ate some of the home-fries that came with it, and a slice of canteloupe, and then went to another friend’s house and had ice cream, and have been trying to get it under 150 (OK, let’s be honest – under 190) all day with very little success.

The only thing I can figure out about MY diabetes is that if I don’t eat at all, my basals keep me nice and level, and I can get my BGs down into the 70’s and 80’s. Eat one bloody thing (OK, I like my steaks rare!), and zoom and don’t bother coming down. That was a bit of an exaggeration, but I really can’t eat like “normal” people do and I DON’T LIKE IT!!

Every time I go to my endo (about every 6 months) I ask for a few of their free samples of Lantus that they always seem to have. I keep them in the fridge and have them just in case something happens.

Do you do any pump adjustments for your runs?

LOL, I just typed this in some other thread but it’s sort of “the plan” although I am a total 'fiddler" and will adjust depending on which way the wind is blowing:

“I usually turn my pump down to 50% if my BG <110 when I start running or 67% if it’s '> 110. Then I check the CGM at 2 or 3 miles, depending on how hot it is and have the first swig of my more concentrated Gatorade [45G of powdered GA/ 8 oz bottle] if it’s running lower and the 'thinner” GA [12G/ bottle] if it’s running higher. Then another couple of miles and keep an eye on it, if it starts to crash, I turn it down to 7%, because 7 is ‘lucky’ then, when I’m 2-3 miles from home, I’ll turn the rate back up to 100% or normal to start attacking the post-run spike"

I lug all of the gear in this, from Naperville Running Company, except for the aftermarket binderclip to belay the tubing:

I joined up w/ their training group and they are constantly harping on everyone to bring hydration along as there’ve been some pretty hot days and you can feel the heat pretty easily. Some of the people who didn’t bring drinks or “I don’t like belts” are getting them as it’s heated up. It makes me feel good not to be the only one concerned about running out of gas?

Is your post run spike due to messing with your basal? You don’t lower your basal hours before you start running?

I don’t usually turn it down for hours before I go. A lot of times, I have stuff to do and squeeze the runs in but, rather than “up” I want it in “the middle” so I can keep adding carbs during the run, like 8-15/ 3 miles, in the Gatorade, which is important. I think the spikes are 1) due to adrenaline as I almost always sprint when I get close to home and 2) due to the CGM lag, for a while it was dropping during and staying down so, when I got some shorts that would hold my meter, I would test like 6 or 7 miles in and the CGM “64” would be a meter 95 so it was going up, likely from the carbs. When I wasn’t metering, and just following the CGM, I was treating the CGM lows I didn’t need to treat. The last few runs, I’ve run down to 82 at the end of the run and then spiked to 120-140 maybe? This is still a spike but not a huge project.
