I've been on a low dose of Lisinopril and a low dose aspirin for over 20 years now with no ill effects. My blood pressure has always been really good so I only take half of a 5 mg tablet daily - so tiny I had to get a pill cutter to get it accurate. If there's any chance that something so simple can help prevent a nasty complication, I'm all for it.
Np,
Having been on both Lisinopril and Losartan, I can defintely say that Losartan is the more milder of the two. I have not noticed any side-effects at all. If anything, I do get light headed when I stand up sometimes, but it's hard to differentiate the feeling now from the one I had before I was on Losartan. The best thing I can say is that I've had 2 years of normal urinalyses since going on Losartan. When I was first put on Losartan, I monitored my BP closely several times a day just to make sure it was not going too low, and it was solid in the sweet spot at 110-115/60-70 most of the time.
I use toprol XL not an ace inhibitor for BP and 84 MG Asprin. The cardiologist put me on the toprol XL shortly before the open heart surgery and no, I did not have a blockage. The open surgery was to correct a genetic abnormality on the left side of my heart.
Thanks John, I had an echo done and they said that everything was ok except for some minor blood flow back in one area of my heart which ten % of people have with no problems. I also wore a halter and they said very occasionally I had an irregular heart beat with nothing to worry about there either and my carotid artery is free of any plaque. Would LAD show up on an echo? I still have to do the stress test. I may try the drug he recommended.. it wasn't an ace inhibitor. I have had palpitations for a long time now and most likely it was hormonal. Now I seem to get them with insulin and bg changes too. My brother has asymtomatic entrophic cardiomyopathy and my father has a pacemaker and electrical problems and a fib. I have been on and off aspirin since I got off warfarin but it ends up hurting my stomach too much.
I think my father is on diovan now. I don't think lisinopril is a good idea for me- I may try the other one. I'm sure I would get swelling- I have lots of allergies/asthma etc. and I react to a lot of drugs. I think the insulin is giving me an itchy rash now after a few months.
super sally, no my bg is not high overall, but I still am having a lot of fluctuation at times... my last a1c was 5.1. I will have another soon. I seem to go up dramatically at times when I have eaten nothing or only had a cup of tea. Last night I went from 99 to 147 in 2-3 hours from 11-1 am or so- all I had was chamomile tea, raw stevia extract and heavy cream- that's it. crazy. The highest I have been since August, as far as I know, was 170 2 weeks ago- again I went to sleep at 3 am in the 90's and woke up at 5 am at 170 with no explanation- I had not eaten anything for a few hours and I drank some water that was it. I took my 2 units of basal, I usually take it then, and one unit novolog, woke up an hour later and took another, it hadn't budged- and then an hour later after another unit novolog it had gone to 107 or so....
Anyway, no I would not say they are high overall, I am very sensitive to stress though and tend to go up or down rapidly from that.
I'm going to wait and see what my endo says. I would like to take baby aspirin every day, for preventing more dvt, but I think vitamin e and red wine is all I can do. I take the aspirin when my symptoms get worse, I have venal insufficiency from a dvt and sometimes it feels like another dvt. the symptoms get better with aspirin and wine.
thanks Rick, I will look xl up as another possibility.
I think I will monitor my bp for a bit and see how it goes...
thanks Kathy :)
Thanks Super Sally and everyone else, I will post back to let you know what I end up doing, I think one of the reasons I hesitate to take another med fulltime is that when my brother went all sorts of meds for his heart & cholesterol, he gained tons of weight... I would say that is NOT good. His cholesterol is high though, mine isn't.
Hi Meee,
I've been type 1 for about 52 years now and was put on Lisinopril about 28 years ago after my 2nd child was born and had some protein showing up in my urine. My kidneys repaired within 6 months and I'm still taking it as a precaution. After having D for as many years as I have, I will keep trying to protect all my organs as even after 52 years, diabetes does take its toll on us.
That's good it repaired your kidneys Linda, I'm glad that it protects you. I'm going to do some reading & then decide what to do. I was only diagnosed last May so I'm not sure how long my body has been affected by all of this yet. I feel some symptoms started a few years ago now.
