Why are there categories here at Tudiabetes about every subject except the one that is most important to managing diabetes type 2: activity, also called exercise? Combined with a low GI diet and doing regular walking I have been able to avoid having to take any prescription medications or insulin since I was diagnosed in 1998.
I realize that for many people the reason they got into trouble in the first place - with type 2 - was because of a long time on a combination of a sedentary, inactive lifestyle and unhealthy eating. And that for many of those folks the thought of suddenly being expected to get active - walk, jog, swim - can feel daunting. However it is never too late to start, and the satisfaction of achieving Hba1cs in the low 5.0 ranges without taking multiple pills or injecting insulin is absolutely enormous. In addition, there is a mental health aspect to activity that results in a peace of mind and satisfaction that also contributes to lower blood sugars.
For the record my schedule is walking three times a day, for 40 minutes, after each of my three major meals. I look forward to each walk and would recommend that as a course of action to anyone who does not want to become a slave of injections and/or prescription medications.
