Alcohol and diabetes

I like to sail w/ the Captain (Morgan’s his first name) and Diet Coke…It’s the perfect food group!! I don’t have to bolus as the alcohol offsets the low carbs…

Whiskey or scotch for me, because I can put it on ice and it gradually lowers blood sugar. Wine I have to be careful with, beer adds too many carbs. Will have an occasional weak gin and tonic, but for some reason since I got diagnosed, it gets me drunk too fast and then I get a headache.

So in sum, I like whiskey or scotch, with rocks, best! And I always test before to make sure I’m not too low, otherwise I have a drink with a snack. My days of getting tipsy are still here, but getting drunk is pretty much “all done.”

Tonic is basically like Coke or Sprite – serious sugar. That might be why you get headaches. Maybe try diet tonic, or seltzer, instead?

I have used diet tonic, not regular. I think it’s the strength of the gin.

in college if i got too wasted my friends would say it was because i was diabetic. it was actually because i used to drink more than even a non-diabetic person should drink. it was my way of rebelling against D i guess. now i usually just stick to a couple of beers or a _______ and diet. i have gotten sick enough from drinking to win a trip to the hospital with DKA. that was fun… not. i had a nutritionist tell me once that i shouldn’t bolus for beer due to risk for hypoglycemia. i usually don’t, and if I’m eating with it and testing I’m ok. right now i just started pumping and i want to figure out my basals a little bit better before i start drinking again. i’ve had some pretty bad lows and i don’t want to do anything to make them worse!

I’ve certainly cut down since my dx. Rather than a couple of glasses of wine with dinner every evening and a martini or two on Friday before dinner, it’s now maybe a couple of glasses a wine in a week and maybe a martini. My morning fasting BG numbers are usually high compared to my BG throughout the day, when I have a drink before bed my numbers are always lower the next day. Probably higher for the few few hours when I’m sleeping…

Well alcohol itself helps produce insulin. I drink more dry wines, less sugar. Mix drinks are horrible for BG because they usually have juice involved some how. That is why I just stick to taking shots
