Chromium yes, when the stories started up way back when, my husband said why not. And so for 6 months because you have to give stuff time to work, I took supplements everyday. And like cinnamon, didnnotice any difference. And whenever I hear these lines that it helps control blood sugar,I shrug and go on with my usual treatment plan. And whenever I meet someone who says “Oh, did you hear … cures diabetes!” I smile and say, thanks, I’ll just keep taking my insulin. It’s work well for me so far. I’m still here!
But as I have said many, many times, if it works for you great. May concern here is how many people believe everything they see and hear on the internet. For some these claims could have deadly consequences.
I supplement with magnesium citrate and it seems to increase my insulin sensitivity. I have fewer spikes after meals when I take a low dose with insulin. I’ve also taken it when my blood sugar has been high and it (along with insulin) brings me back to a normal range within 30 minutes. It might not work for everyone, but it works for me. I have no idea if there’s any scientific evidence that backs any of this up…I actually stumbled upon it by accident when I was constipated one day (lol) and I found that it lowered my blood sugar dramatically when taken with just a few units of insulin after a heavy carb meal. My doctor told me to keep taking it.
The problem with diabetes is that we desperately need to avoid or reduce the complications but know as well that there is a disconnect between blood sugar control and the development of the complications (1). We also know that there is evidence that the complications may be caused, at least in part, by the continuing autoimmune processes which caused the initial beta cell destruction in type 1 diabetes turning their attack on other parts of the body (2), as well as by genetic influences inherited along with the genes which predispose the patient to developing diabetes (3). So if even strict blood sugar control may not protect us from complications, what are we to do?
Well, there are numerous studies indicating that some supplements may prevent or slow the development of complications. Some of these studies are experimental (i.e., conducted in animals), while others are tentative in their conclusions, but some are more affirmative in their assertion of the benefit of supplements in keeping diabetic complications at bay (4). What should we sensibly do, when faced with the demonstrated inadequacy of strict blood sugar control to prevent the development of complications on the one hand, and the possibility of supplements helping in this struggle? I think it is rational to try supplementation when faced with the fact that we have diabetes now and can’t wait another 20 or 30 years for the research indicating the benefit of supplements to be finalized, in the plodding, hesitant, ultra-conservative style of medical inference. The logical mechanism behind much of the protective effect of supplements on diabetic complications relates to the action of hyperglycemia in promoting inflammation to produce complications, since many of the interventions recommended suppress inflammation (5).

I take a mulit-vitamin, fish oil, a probiotic, vit B and do this little shot glass of greens everyday. IDK if any of that does anything for me, but I figure it can’t hurt.
I think Vit E looks worthy to try. Try or die.
You might already take part, but one of the best ‘supplements’ is exercise and fitness and will help with insulin sensitivity. As for other things that might be useful, provided one doesn’t megadose is B12 to avoid neuropathy and D25 for correlates with multiple positive health outcomes. As with all things supplementation, other than exercise and fitness, the effects are often weak to none.
