Animas ping vs. Omnipod

put a piece of scotch tape over the label and it will last forever. if not, the writing will wear off.

That is a good idea. I think I will cling to mine like I do my purse. I probably keep it in there as a matter of fact. I almost left my meter in plain view again but my husband seen me and hid it for me. I just don’t think sometimes, especially when I am trying to tend to my little one.

Oh I have a question? My sister in-law and law was talking about my mom in-law who is diabetic. Her sugar gets real high at times and she has went really hypo to. 17 and passed out and woke up in the hospital. She has never been offered a pump and I think it would be a excellant choice for her. My sister in law asked me what one was and I simply said to me it is a mechanical pancreas that does what mine wont do. Does anyone else feel this way too?

Thats the way i feel about my pump. An external mechanical pancreas.

We love the pod, and are very glad we went with it, we have never looked back, we to wish we had started podding sooner! The pod is very very reliable and hassle free. Happy pumping!

Cathy, I’m so glad you brought this up. I’ve been struggling with the fact that I can’t get the OmniPod (HMO won’t approve it and we can’t afford the monthly cost out-of-pocket). And, I’ve been dead-set against the “tethered” (tubed) version of pumps, because of my experience during a “test-drive” of one. I also test-drove the Omni, and the differences between the two in day-to-day life was amazingly in favor of the OmniPod! Two specific issues were the inability to get a good night’s sleep with the regular pump, vs. the good nights’ sleep I got with the Omni; and the problem of having to move the tubed pump around frequently during the day, depending on what I was needing to do - very distracting and time-consuming.

That said, however, until this discussion I was convinced that I’d stay on MDI until technology or other factors made the OmniPod affordable. Now, because of some people’s responses to your question, I’m convinced that I might be able to get solutions to some of the difficulties of using a tubed pump. (I shoulda thought to ask the question myself, huh?)

Thanks, again, for bringing this up! And, my thanks to those who gave specifics on how to handle the tubing and pump placement. I’m inspired to “go forth” with pumping - and improve my BG control! (But, as soon as the OmniPod is do-able, I’m switching.)

You are quite welcome. It is a hard decision for me. I like a lot of the omni’s features and a lot of the ping’s so I guess I will discuss it more with my endo. I am wearing the pod demo right now. I do like the feel of it. It does not interfere with anything. I don’t know if my insurance will pay for it or not. I have trouble carb counting so I don’t know which would help me with this. I hate the thought of it. But yeah go ahead and get a pump, it will improve your sugars greatly from what I here. Happy Pumping.

May I ask what type of insurance you have? We are exploring the OmniPod and have a Blue Shield PPO. Thanks!

Hi! My 9-year-old has been recommended to start on an OmniPod – he is newly diagnosed. I am concerned if we can’t manually enter the dose … because at 9, I’m not sure he can absolutely, positively have his PDM on his person at all times. Thoughts? Thanks!

We have Blue Shield also. Blue shield of TN. Mine pays 100% for any pump my endo orders and all supplies, no out of pocket. I do have to pay for quite a few of my meds, but not diabetic meds. Usually if I have to pay a co-pay it is not much.

I just found out indeed if I wanted I could get omnipod but it is a little harder. I would have to send in 2 months logs and my latest a1c has to be no less than 7.0 and they need the last 2 records of a1c’s. Insurance said it is not as proven a method and a lot of problems are coming up. I knew some stuff was going on but did not know it was effecting if people could get them or not through insurance. I just talked to them by the way a couple of minutes ago and then called omni and they said a lot of insurance was dropping them but was still a great product and are still offering them.

This just seems ridiculous to me! Why is one pump no problem to get, but the next one must have tons of documentation “proving” why you need it?! So if you have an HBA1c of 6.5, a tubed pump is fine but a tubeless Omnipod is not? WTF?! Gotta love American insurance companies…

Wishing you the best on your new pump quest…

Cheers, Mike

I know it does seem odd. They are making it harder to get just because insurance does not like them. That is crazy, what about the one who has to wear it. They don’t, it is not their body. Anyways thanks for the luck.

ditto. i’ve been diabetic for almost 16 years and i’ll soon hit my first anniversary with the omnipod. i never used the pump because i KNOW i would rip the tubing out. i also didn’t like having to wear a “pager” on me at all times…i can shower for as long as i want and toss & turn as i sleep.

i’ve been lucky that i haven’t had to pay for pods/pdm/etc, only my insulin.

I’m a newbie (to Diabetes and Blogs!!)… I was diagnosed 1 year ago and I’m now ready to go with a pump - sounds like the best way to manage ones diabetes, so as I make these steps I’m looking at the omnipod verus the animas ping. I’m active year round in outrigger canoeing and swim (beach/pool) lots during summer, so want something that is more water freindly. I just finished a demo with the omnipod (I didn’t knock it off and gave it a few attempts) and still “fear” tubing with other units, so thinking the omnipod but then wondering now that I’m reading more on this blog… I’m not yet fully informed as I have no clue about prices and other needed equipment - can someone give me a brief summary of things one should be aware of with either pump? I also hope to be able to get a Dexcom unit too, I looked at that when I first got diagnosed, but was hoping if I waited a year the pump and GCM would be talking to each other, but I don’t want to wait any longer!!

Any other suggestion and/or helpful tips…they are greatly appreciated!!
