Another day...Another Blood sugar

Hey everyone. My BG was 192 this morning and 69 last night. Since im newly diagnosed, 69 is my lowest BG everrrr! Taking shots everyday is such a pain. I take two shots a day and I have bruises on my arms and legs from them. Does anyone know why that is?!? ALL my friends ask me how I get them and its annoying! And its strange cause my skin usually is very tough and i don’t bruise that often…

I used to get bruises all the time to start with, but after a year and a bit they’ve stopped - I think it’s just one of those things you get while your body gets used to it!

Thanks for the info. Im going to stop using shots shortly anyways but I thought maybe there was some way to give the shots where they wouldn’t bruise your skin. I totally understand what your saying though! In 2 months im going on the animas 2020 pump.

Well I’d imagine to start with you might find that you still get bruising around infusion sites, but I’m sure that it settles down just as with the shots!

I bruise VERY easily… so I used to be all bruised from my shots too. Sometimes I get bruises from the infusion set on the pump, but not very often.

When I was on injections, I would give them on my tummy or my upper butt— that way even if I got bruised no one could see it. I used tummy when I was away from home (at school etc) and my butt or thighs when I was at home (it’s easier to pull down your pants and give a shot at home ;)…).

I’m surprised that you are only taking two shots a day. I used to take 4-6. What type of insulin are you using?

If it’s anything like when I was diagnosed, I was put straight onto NovoMix 30 twice a day, before moving to Basal/Bolus about 3 months later.

i was just diagnosed so i mix NPH with H in the morning and the same before I eat breakfast. Im not on lantus like you probably are unless your on the pump…

my cousin also has type 1 diabetes on she only bruised a few times ever with shots and the pump…i guess its different with every person  she had diabetes since she was 3 and now shes 10.

Kris-

what ios Novomix 30? I never heard of it before.

It’s a mix of 30% NovoRapid and 70% intermediate acting insulin that they often put newly diagnosed type 1s on around here. It’s a way to start bringing BG down and getting people used to the injections, but it’s not very flexible, so after a few months most move on to Basal/Bolus treatment.

I know what you mean…a lot of the nurses and doctors at the hospital are pushing me to get on that system esecially because i am newly diganosed. But, now that they see my numbers are really pretty much stable, except for this morning, that I am defff ready for the pump. Thats why im getting it in May.

If you will switch to the pump anyway, then there is no need to switch insulins, if it’s working for now.

I am on the pump now, but when I was on injections, I used Lantus for my basal and Humalog for meal and correctino boluses.

Im deffinetly going on the pump because im in school. It will make life a whole lot easier and i like the idea that the pump gives you a little insulin all the time. Lantus would just not work for me.

Im not wanting to switch insulins…I just wanted to know what Novolog is, lol.

How long have you been on the pump for? and which pump do you use?

You could try taking some extra Vitamin C (if not already taking it), especially this can help with your overall immunity and skin bruising. Also, check with a good herbalist in your area on other ways you could minimize bruising. Take care and hope this gets easier while you anxiously await the Animas pump start date.
P.S. – Coincidentally, I did get a big bruise on my abdomen just the other day – I think I just managed to hit a capillary or other ‘non-friendly’ injection site when trying to insert my pump site. Sorry if this is “TIMI” (!).
But I did apply ice right after and some gentle pressure and massage, and this seemed to help it heal faster.
