Last month I was in the hospital for a benign tumor in my thyroid gland. Turned out to be Thyroid Cancer so I got another trip to the hospital and another surgery. Last time they wouldn't let me go home due to vomiting. This time they gave me a scop patch and I had no nausea but the room kept spinning round and round. They finally took it off and the dizziness went away. Just when I got ready to go home the nausea kicked in. I said it was just an air bubble as I blapped (sorry) on the floor. All the way to the car the nurse kept saying we would like to keep you overnight. I clenched my teeth to avoid vomiting again. Once I pulled away in the car with my sister I was sick all the way home. But I didn't have to stay and have my blood glucose mismanaged and an inappropriate diet so believe me it was well worth it. I pray that I am all done with the hospital. I still have to take radioactive iodine for the cancer but it's outpatient. Thanks for listening to me!!
I'm sorry you had to go through all that, Kathyann and I wish you the best with your radiation treatments - yes, at least it's outpatient!
Glad the hospital part is all behind you now and wishing you the best for your future treatments. Hugs, Maureen
Hi Kathyann,
omg, sounds horrible. I glad you made it home and that it will be outpatient now. What happens after the radioactive iodine? Do you go on thyroid hormone meds? I hope everything goes well and you start to feel better soon.
Kathyann, thinking the best for you in your recovery. While I haven't had thyroid cancer, I have had Graves disease which was treated with RAI (radioactive iodine), back in 1977. It takes time to work through the medication adjustments, but once your set, your good. It's nothing compared to diabetes management. Take care.
Thanks to everyone for your kind words. I started Levothyroxine 112 mcg which made me pretty nauseated the first two days. Today is a little better. I start work next week (teach first grade) so my doctor will do the radioactive iodine later this fall. I do think it's terrible the way they manage diabetes in the hospital. They wouldn't give me insulin and kept saying we would rather you be high than low. Well I can correct a low in 15 to 30 min but I can stay high for hours. When I got home from the hospital my bgs stayed well over 200 for 24 hours.
I don't know what I would do without this website. Even when I don't comment I am reading it everyday and it helps me keep my sanity. Again thank you!!
