actually, many just start off with a bolus as their fasting (the second phase i think) levels are still OK. no one injects insulin for the sake of injecting or they'd go low. if one is purposely low carbing to not take insulin that still puts a strain on the body, i would imagine.
Great postā¦I sometimes feel bad about taking it. I hate to even take pain reliever so insulin is justā¦
I actually donāt think that going off bolus insulin completely is very good and will preserve beta cells from dying. There are still carbs, even in butter :-), plus when eating low carb, 58% of protein will turn into glucose eventually. I believe in small numbers :-).
Im am so glad you said that. That is the debate im having with my CDE now.
I count ALL carbs.
Although my diet seems to have helped me a lot, I really like food and some higher carb foods and I would definitely go back to where I was before D if I were cured. I was always very healthy for the most part and although at times I prolly ate too high carb a diet when indulging etc., and due to who I was hanging out with it didn't cause me to gain weight or have any major health problems. I don't believe my life long diet caused my D or anything else but I do believe I have always had type 1 and always had carb reactions. I am kind of a health conscious person and I do think there is way too much sugar/carbs in foods that are pushed on us,not just junk food- a lot of supposedly healthy foods are also very high carb. But I don't believe diet is everything or in extremes for the most part, a balanced diet is the best. I have tried nearly everything dietary wise, I was vegetarian and then vegan for a year also prior to my D coming on and I do wonder if that stressed my body out actually because I started having dry eye problems at that time. I guess we can never know for sure what causes what, just as we can't know for sure why some people can tolerate carbs better even with D. I have always loved raw veggies and they have always been a large part of my diet- I think I must have been a rabbit in a former life for sure, lol.
I agree, insulin is not a failure. I don't like being on insulin injection vs. my natural insulin, but I realize I need it to stay alive now. That was proven to me last year when I almost lost my life in DKA and from DVT. I would caution any type 1 who tries to go completely off insulin to be extremely careful about it, mostly I would say don't do it because it's too risky. A friend's gf who was type 1 since childhood died when she tried to go off insulin and her other meds while following a diet. I would also like to hear real stories from type 1 who have gone off insulin, if there actually are any, not just, "I know type 1 who have done this" I want facts and evidence, not hearsay.
I count all carbs too, although I'm not as strict about it as I was because I eat pretty much the same thing most of the time. My question is when I was reading books on carb content etc. I found a lot of difference in carb contents given for the same foods. Some sources said chicken has carbs and some said not.
Like many others who have commented here, I was diagnosed with Type 1 as an adult (5 months ago at age 44) and quickly adopted a low-carb diet as a means to limit the amount of insulin I needed to take daily and to try to prolong my honeymoon. It has worked really well thus far. My A1c went from 15.6 at diagnosis to 6.3 four months later. My carb intake ranges from 75-98 a day.My endo doesn't support or discourage this approach, she is just impressed by my progress and says, 'Keep it up.' (She's in NYC) Best of luck to you and your son!
I see different carb amounts depending on the book als
Right now im just using Calorie King
That was one of the books the dietician at my endo first gave me to use. I haven't used it at all lately though.
@kaitype1 came across this post from years ago and wondered if you could provide any update on your sonās journey with low carb? My 3yo was recently diagnosed and 2 weeks out of the hospital due to DKA he is now off insulin completely while eating low carb (lots of non starchy veggies and meats/fats). He seems to be thriving with very ānormalā BG levels but obviously we are super early on our journeyā¦
