Bad Dexcom sensor?

I just inserted a new Dexcom G7. When I tried entering the number it said it was an invalid number. I tried it multiple times; I am absolutely positive I entered it correctly. There was an option to skip that step, so I did. Now my pump says my CGM is out of range from my pump. They’re like three inches apart.
To make matters worse my last order only sent me three G7’s, instead of my usual nine. I only have two left after this defective one, and Byram says they will send me new ones on August 25, so I don’t have enough to last. I’m really upset and freaked out. Should I call Dexcom or Byram? I tried the chat a few minutes ago but it says it is closed.
Has anyone looked into another brand of CGM? I’m not happy with Dexcom right now.

Ok, I seem to have solved this problem. After waiting on hold forever, I talked to someone at Tandem. My pump sensor was changed from a G7 to a G6. I don’t think I did this, but I can’t swear it. I think it changed due to an error of some kind. I stopped and started the sensor again, and so far, so good.

Ok. I’ll be honest. I was about to go to the G7 until all of these issues came up and continue to come up. The most concerning in my mind is the issue of the senor wire coming thru the case. Dexcom has not acknowledged what is causing this and if it is a manufacturing issue from wher these failures were made, ( china, India). The only issue I’ve had with the G6 sense it issue is two sensors the had injector failure ( 3yrs apart). And one that went in to “signal loss” and never cleared.. I’ve only had one fall off “From Swimming”. This was prior to the issue of over patches.
I do not see these issue of the G7 with people using the Libre line.

Also not a fan of the G7. First was the adhesive that didn’t stick. Have had wore poke through three times over the years. Have had a lot of sensor failures. Dexcom is starting to get nasty. I told the last tech that if they made a better product they wouldn’t get so many calls for replacements. Compression lows when place on arm are constant for me. I wear on abdomen. G6 was a much better product.

Out of the last 12 G7 sensors 6 have failed. The problem was clearly visible on all 6 failed sensors. The insertion seems fine until you look closely and you can see the sensor protruding from the hole. It appears the sensor is sticking to the insertion needle and being pulled back out. Dexcom has replaced them, but a terrible waste of time. There appears to be no quality control!!

I’ve had 1 G7 sensor last 10 days out of the last 5. It is an inconvenience for sure although getting replacements from Dexcom has been trouble free. Have not noticed the wire protrusion issue but they just stop working anywhere from Day 0 to Day 8 or 9. When the opportunity arises I am switching to Libre.

Edited to add: Actually I did have the wire protrusion on the sensor that failed during warmup. Here is a pic after removal from my arm:

Initially when I switched from G6 to G7 in March 2024, I did not notice many problems. But by January 2025 I had experienced multiple failures and long periods without sensor readings. In February I switched back to G6 and have not experienced any of these problems. In May 2025 I began using the Omnipod 5 system and cannot imagine getting that system to be functional with the poor performance of the G7. If there are reasons to stay with Dexcom (such as pump system, insurance, or other issues) I would highly recommend switching to the G6 sensor for improved reliability. I will admit, I am also thinking about what I will do when they stop making G6 and have not decided how I will approach that. Perhaps try Freestyle? Best of luck.

Although i saw your issue was resolved, a few months ago the FDA noted a manufacturer issue, which could delay shipments. Other folks have noted other issues.

There are some less expensive (tho not necessarily cheap) OTC sensors becoming available. Dexcom Stelo and Abbott Lingo. If i find myself in a bind, even tho i can’t see that these pair with insulin pumps, i’d certainly consider them.

Thanks for the reminder about those. When travelling it will be easier to pick up one of those in a bind rather than getting a prescrip sent to a local pharmacy. Or Amazon…$89 for the Stelo
