Basal reduction and yoga?

Any pumpers out there who do yoga that can offer some advice on basal reduction? I am starting yoga again and I have no idea if I should reduce my basal at all or at what rate. When I do a regular workout with 30 minutes of training and 30 minutes of cardio, I reduce my basal for 3 hours at 50%, starting an hour before I work out. This has kept me in good BG range. Yoga doesn’t make me sweat the way my regular workout does (this is not a hatha yoga class, those make me throw up)! I haven’t done yoga since I started pumping so I wasn’t sure how to handle this. I would call my doc’s office but they are closed today.

Yogi Suzanne,

It depends on how strenuous and long your session is. If you’re not breaking a sweat, I wouldn’t reduce it at all.

The longer and more strenuous the more likely I’d be to reduce my basal, but the fact is that I don’t reduce my basal at ALL for a one hour yoga class. I’ll reduce for a one hour run, but yoga? Nah.

As always, YMMV, so keep some fast acting carbs nearby, just in case.

Terry

Suzanne, I haven’t done yoga in years. It never made any difference to my bloods, did tone me up though. Trial and error I suppose, but I reckon Terry is right ( as always Terry ). Make sure you wear a fabulous outfit though, that’s all that matters really !!!

Thanks guys! That was kind of what I was thinking, no reduction since the class is not strenuous. And Jo, I do look fab in my yoga pants

Hello:

Don’t know if you got any answers to this, but I might suggest the Yoga Journal Forums at www.yogajournal.com if you phrased it well, you might find an answer there? There was a book called the “Diabetic Athlete” by Sheri Coleberg which had this type of thing in the first edition of her book, but had nothing re: Yoga that I recall. She recently redid it (2nd ed.), and expanded many activities to hear it told.
You might try amazon.com and do a inside book search for it, if that’s available? She also has a website you might try?
