Bleeding from infusion site

Hey guys,
I was going to hit the showers after a run and i looked at my site and i could see blood around the cannula. So i pulled the adhesive off so i could change the site and blood started pouring out of my site and would not clot or stop. after my fiance walked in and there was blood literally all down my legs and pooling on the floor, i got it to stop. Has this happened to anyone? I also do not remember doing anything that would agitate the site.

This has happened to me a few times.
Always check your blood sugar when this happens.

I use the omnipod and two things usually happen…

  1. Blood “crusties” will gather around the cannula in the window. If blood sugar is okay and a site change isn’t due yet, I leave it alone.

  2. After pod insertion, if it stings and cgm starts going crazy, I’ll check my blood sugar. If it’s significantly higher, I’ll yank the site. Usually I “oooze” blood for a very long time. It looks thick and runs down. I’m not squeamish over blood but the way it oozes or dribbles and looks thick… I’ve almost puked and passed out. When this happens I usually bruise in that spot. Applying pressure helps.

As for why it happens, I’m not sure. Maybe a capillary was hit or something? Or the small friction/agitation of the site from running?

I wear an apron over my pants when I change.

I’ve had one gusher in the two months I’ve been on the pump. Like so many things I had heard about it on TuD, so, though it was a bit startling to see so much blood coming out, I just said, “ah, this is a gusher, happens sometimes, nothing to worry about”. What would we do without TuD to give us exposure to such a wide variety of experiences so when it happens to us we know it’s normal…or as close to normal as we ever get anyway.

Happened to me. A little alarming, but turned out to be nothing serious.
