Changed the title of the post. I switched to this diuretic for swelling from insulin. Interested if others have any PROS or CONS to share about this medication. I hear it is superior to others and hope it works to reduct my swelling and water retention from the insulin. Hope this may help others that are looking for a diuretic to ease swelling…
Anyone taking this for fluid retention relief? I just took the first pill today prescribed by my endo. Within 3 hours of taking the pill, I already fell the fluid leaving my body and less swollen areas of my body!! Will be watching to see if I start losing the 15 pounds gained in the first two weeks of beginning insulin therapy last October.
I can’t believe how fast this pill has reduced the fluid retention. Wondering if others have tried this or other diuretics? I must be at the extreme end of the spectrum for retaining fluid. I have felt pregnant for months so bloated and swollen. I hope it works permanently!!!
HCTZ has been around for a loooong time and is amazingly effective for treating edema. However, it is not potassium-sparing; a low potassium level (hypokalemia) is extremely serious, so beware!
I take a diuretic, not really for edema, but it was recommended as helping to prevent kidney stones. As @rgcainmd says, HCTZs are an older drug, they are cheap and are on the Walmart $4/$10 formulary list. However there is some thought that more modern diuretics ares superior. I take Chlorthalidone which is actually available as a generic.
thanks I will ask my endo for a modern one like chlorthalidone…i feel much better with reduced swelling all over today than the past months. will call Monday.
My endo switched me to chlorthalidone yesterday. Thanks for the referral a few months ago. Doctor switched me at my visit when I told him I still feel bloated. He checked my ankles and feet and glad he switched me to this one that others like.
