College Cafeteria's and how to maintain a diet in college

Hey everyone! I was wondering if anyone else here is on a meal plan at school. Since the room I stay in doesn’t have a kitchen, I kind of need one. It makes it harder I think to stay on an eating schedule. Also the choice of foods isn’t always great. If anyone has any tips or stories or even complaints, post it up!

PS: does anyone here skip breakfast? I often can’t wake up early enough to get to the dining hall or else I’m late for class. I know this is prolly not good, but anyone else do that?

get a mini fridge!!! lol and invest in nutrigrain bars, cereal bars, poptarts… anything easily grabbed on the go. it is not a substitute for a meal, but it’s better than not eating at all. i go to school in the middle of a city, which makes things a little easier; more options and accessibility. aslo you can get a microwave for your room, i’m not sure how much space you have though…
it’s not easy and although staying on some sort of eating schedule is important, it not tat critical as long as you do get some food, nutritious food is a plus!, in there during the day. it really depends how you manage your diabetes.

personally i have gone whole days without eating anything besides starbucks coffee, but then i don’t think i’m a perfect role model either lol

yeah, going to school in the city would be nice. i’m in the middle of nowhere in lancaster county. i have a tiny minifridge and a microwave but everytime i buy food for it, it ends up rotting in there. eating is such a problem for me cuz not only do i watch carbs but like, i’m sensitive to meat and dairy. if i eat too much my insulin like slows down and doesn’t work well for the other stuff i eat. i guess it’ll just take some persiverence. i feel you on the coffee though. can’t live without it!

which school in lancaster do you go to ? im from the wilkes-barre area and went to wilkes university for a semester

don’t worry it just takes getting used to. nothing is every easy with diabetes, lol

Millersville University. but i’m originally from the poconos. i lived outside of scranton off of rt. 380. thanks for the support! what’s sad is that i’ve had diabetes as long as i can remember but my mom always took care of it. i got to college and realized what a big stress it is. and how much work.

omg, it just occurred to me that you live in arlington right? right now i’m living with my parents in alexandria. and we both came from NEPA. small world.

lol awesome! why/ when did you move down here?

my dad works for the faa and so my parents got an apartment down here. i’m living with them whenever i’m not in school  yay summer break!

I am on a meal plan too and food here just sucks, it’s basically disgusting. And the problem I have is I always end up trying a bunch of stuff that is offered but can never figure out in advance what and how much carbs will end up eating. I have a fridge and a microwave but in my room I usually just keep snacks for low bloodsugars.

At my school they have a variety of “restaurants” or themed food areas, which i know isnt always healthy. Can you get the contact info for the company who supplies the food items and suggest healthier items?

Try to find a farm store near by and load on vegetables and focus on proteins, the colloge I go to has the most horriable cafeteria.so I usually eat meats of all sorts since that’s the only thing I have access to as a diabetic, good luck.
