Hi I am Nicky and I have just joined the forum yesterday ,my son has been diagonsed with type 1 since last October and is 12 years old . We have been managing with Mdi since last year and are now thinking of moving on to the pump. We are in Asia nd do not have Omnipod available here , therefore we have to choose between Medtronic and Accu chek
Any advice on the comparisons of these two would be very helpful
Thanks
Hi Nicky,
We use accu check combo because my daughter prefers to be discrete not showing her pump which she keeps under her clothes. She can completely control her pump through the monitor. Accu check can also carry more insulin that meditronic. The advantage of Meditronic is the option to have a CGM (continuous Glicemic monitor) through another needle that needs to be replaced every 3 days. But after much consideration and reading about, we realized the the CGM is not accurate, and my daughter would still need to check her blood at leas 5 times a day. We're satisfied with it and are looking forwards for a new version coming in 2015, probably with a SIM card inside so that all data is share automatically to my phone when she measures her blood. Of course, I'm mostly looking forwards for the cure of diabetes T1. Take care!
Thanks for your reply Dioi
It really helps to connect with people sailing on the same boat , learning is the best thing we can so at this point till there is a miracle cure!!
My 6 yr old son started on the Minimed in August. We are still adjusting the settings but life is so much easier without having to give him a shot for everything. I'm not sure exactly why we chose the minimed over the Animas Ping. I believe it was by recommendation from others and I know we liked the idea that Medtronic is the frontrunner in terms of the artificial pancreas. And, it had a built in CGM.
That being said - I am now thinking in hindsight it (the Animas Ping) would be so much easier than having to program in blood sugars and carbs to a device that is tethered to him and he would "feel" more normal.
At a recent conference we did learn that Animas's new version (which will be linked somehow to a CGM) will not have the ability to have a separate device - it will be more like the minimed in that you will have to do all calculations with the pump itself.
Hope this all makes sense. Ultimately wish the artificial pancreas was closer to completion than 15 yrs out.
Good luck!
