Continual Site Failure

Thanks for the support!

I'm sorry to hear of all the troubles with the pump. I've now been on insulin for a year, the MDI seems to work fine. Perhaps I could get better control with a pump, but I have some real worries that scaring can be a serious long-term problem. I'll be interested in how you feel about the MDI. It sounds like you had to carry a pen around anyway recently and with all your site troubles your control may actually improve. But after those quick improvements, in perhaps six months you may feel differently. Do keep us updated.

My daughter uses the 6mm Quickset also. Starting in August we started having a problem with site fails. When we took the site out we saw that the cannula was kinked. The failed sets were all from the same batch number and I thought that maybe it was a manufacturing defect. But I also found out, when talking to my supplier, that they been bought out by another company and our supplies were now being shipped across country from Arizona by truck to Michigan. Ultimately I think that exposure to summer time heat during shipping may have compromised the plastic cannulas. Since we have gotten into the winter months and switched to 2 day shipping, air not ground, we have not had the problem again.

Hi Alssa,

How have your pumping infusion sites been working these years?
Looks like these are serious real issue. I had called nurse saw doctors and
medtronic help lines. Only advice is trying different sets. But now it seem
none even works for any short of period of time.

I had the same problem around year 2000. I started pumping in 1999.

Here is my story:

I have pumped insulin on Medtronic pump for 16 years now.
The first 10 years, delivery was accurate and I never had much of problems.
My control is within non-diabetics level.

About 6 year ago, I got no insulting delivery or partial delivery, so
often got unusually high. So I switched back and forth
between all the infusion sets in order for some kind of the infusion sets to work.
2 months ago I switched off Silhouette since it stopped working, back on
Sure T. But it worked a couple of weeks. I had to change the set
every 1 1/2 days.
And it’s getting shorter and shorter time for a Sure-T to work.
Right now, it’d be good luck if it works overnight that long.
I am seriously thinking about going back to injections.
Any better long term insulin to use these days. I actually attempted a couple
of years ago after all the existing Medtronic infusion sets failed on me.

Any other pump manufacturers carried REALLY different infusion sets
that may change the dynamics of working or not working. I remember
that I studied a few years ago, they do not seem to any difference in
terms of infusion sets. i.e. either canola or metal inside your body.

I have used upper arm, thighs, waist, butt. No luck of success.

Anyone any comment ? I am really frustrated. During the day time,
I resort to needle injection currently.
