Cortisone trigger diabetes? and weight loss? helppp

back to six month ago, before my c section my oby gyn injected me with betamethasone the night before surgery, the next day after surgery my blood pressure was as high as 160/100, and i was told preeclampsia postpartum, i doubt it cause i felt something wrong with my body, i keep losing weight, there fore i did a series of blod work and found my blood sugar was 100 ml/dl, usually i fast at 70s and post prandial always at 80s at 2 hour. now my postprandial usually around 120.

curious, i started to do surf internet, and find article and Jenny’s website at bloodsugar 101, which suggest cortisone could probably induce diabetes even just a single dose.

i follow low carb diet, and another problem is that i keep losing weight, i am already underweight, eat protein i have some kidney problem, so i do high fat diet, but still lose weight. i dont wanna eat more carb, sinc i heard higher blood sugar will kill the rest of my beta cell, i am trying to preserve those beta cells, but i wanna put on weight, coz i look so skinny. can anyone uggest how to put on weight.

i also suffer from anxiety, perhaps due to i have to accept the fact that i have blood sugar imbalance. i wanna live longer to see my baby grow, so devastated about this desease, and hope i can live longer to wath my baby grow, and afraid that cortisone will affect her too?

talk to doctor but because my fastig bg always at 90s, most daoctor says i’m fine, but my post prandial showing that i have impaired bg. is it early stage of LADA, MODY , skinny type 2?

i e-mail several diabetes expert, most of them said its impossible to reverse my condition completely.

Hello Tata,
yes a single shot of cortisone can trigger diabetes in an susceptible person.
May I ask a couple of questions:
1.How was your clinical situation before pregnancy?
2.How did it change during pregnancy?
3. What blood tests have you done?
4.Have you talked to an endocrinologist? Seems you are suffering from a sever corticosteroidal hormone imbalance that has to be quickly restored back to balance or near to it…and the anxiety is not only a reaction to your situation but also a result of your hormonal imbalance.

Acquafortis,

thanx for your response,

i saw many doctor, but other than treat the underlying cause they prescribe me with anti depressant, i didnt take those ssri, and due to my financial ability, i could not keep seeing doctor wasting money, i have no insurance, so i try to find out why through internet

  1. before pregnancy I was very healthy, my fasting bg around 70s, postprandial around mid 80s, i knew it from a premarital check up and annual check up.

  2. during pregnancy I was healthy for first and second trimester, at 3rd trimester my blood sugar slight elevated from my usual 110/70 to 120/80 and final month at 130/90, i thought i have preeclampsia but doctor says its ok, urine show no protein until finally, one night before c section my urine show a little protein. its an elective pregnancy at 39 weeks, my baby is healthy, but the oby gyn said he wanted to speed up the lung maturity so he injected celestone sodium phospate aka betamethasone, high potent cortisone to my bloodstream said to speed up lung maturity. even, recently i learned steroid only needed if tha baby was under weight or under 34weeks, my baby has normal birth weight.

shortly after surgery, my blood pressure when skyrocketing high, and i could not sleep at all, only when i breastfed i feel sleepy, and i stopped breastfeeding at two month, and i notice only after i stopped breastfeeding my anxiety has become worse and so severe.

  1. i tested my bg, cholesterol, urine, faeces, renal function, liver function, all are normal except blood sugar at 100 and very high cholesterol at total 280.

  2. i talked to endo, but here in Indonesia, endo still hold to old education about diabetes and suspect i have postpartum thyroiditis, but it turn out normal, my tsh at 2 and normal t3 and t4

and now i suffer from anxiety, blood sugar imbalance, burning sensation, weight loss and muscle loss, joint pain.

however i was able to control my bg by limited my carb, last month have my bg checked at 91 ml/dl. and post prandial at under 120.

but i suspect when i feel anxious or scare my bg started to climb, could this cause by excess cortisol and its job to raise bg, cause my liver keep dumping glucose?

super_sally,

thanx a lot, i try to manage this condition my best, here in Indonesia not many person aware of this condition, i hope i can reverse this condition, even i email some expert that said its quite impossible to reverse it completely. my condition is quite complicated. i am afraid of eating too much protein will cause kidney problem, since during pregnancy i leaked a little amount of protein. thanx.

It sounds like your blood glucose is slowly increasing & you’re wise to keep on top of this. Jenny’s site is wonderful!

Following a low carb diet is the best thing to keep things under control, When I lost too much weight, I slowly added more protein (like you, I didn’t want to increase carbs). I don’t eat excessive protein because I’m small. It would be worth discussing with your doctor how much protein your kidneys can safely handle. I’m sorry that it’s such a terrible challenge to balance possibly harming your kidneys with additional protein or increasing your blood sugar with more carbs, which in turn is risky for your kidneys. If you do increase carbs, do this with vegetables & nuts, not grain products. I hope your doctor can advise you about adding more protein.

Your numbers are far from bad & I understand your concern.

The only way to know if you’re LADA, MODY, T1 or T2 is through lab tests. MODY testing is very expensive.

Gerri,

probably this is very early stage and i spotted earlier than other, my doctor said my number was fine, and he said “it is fine, two hour pp should be less than 180ml/dl”, so, i learn a lot from jenny website rather than my doctor. and my doctor prescribed me with beta blocker and SSRI which could only make it from bad to worse. recently i did an experiment as jenny suggested DIY glucose tolerance test, and my number has become better than before, really thanx to jenny website. Jenny did say that due to I am young and lack of diabetes history just hope that my beta cell will be preserved or even recover. but this cortisone side effect still bother me, some expert says it will improve in time. I’ve been experiencing skin fragility.

i think now i could not afford MODY test.

yes, sally,

i did retest at 1 month postpartum and still +1 and corrected with mini dose of captopril and at 3 month postpartum my urine has no protein and renal function is perfect  but still i carefully watch my diet. Thanx God i found this site and Jenny site which help me alot

Tata,

I was thinking that you caught this early as well. Under 180 pp is the standard party line, which is unfortunate. It seems that the majority of doctors prefer to wait until diabetes is advanced to take action. So much for early dectection. Anything & everything you can do to preserve your beta cells is important. You’re so far ahead of most people who are diagnosed far into the disease. Educating yourself & being your own advocate is critical–good for you! Sadly, we can’t relie on doctors to do what’s in our best interests.

Are the beta blockers for your kidneys, or do you have heart problems? Beta blockers can increase depression.

Just read below that your kidneys are fine. Wonderful. You can add some more protein to your diet to gain weight. Lack of protein effects our emotions & our health. We can’t live without adequate protein.

You’re doing everything you can right now. Please don’t despair. You will live to see your grandchildren.

I couldn’t afford a MODY test either.

Hope that can your pancreas will recover!

Gerri,

Thanx, I will live to see my grandchildren, I have a plan that if I really could recover I will have another baby, it is a right choice to join this forum.
At first, I cried a lot, depressed, I couldn’t accept the fact that cortisone in my case which very unnecessary cause me this, but it happened.

I have steroid induced skin problem, muscle problem, anxiety, weakness, high blood pressure, but I
But I think if those things didn’t kill me, it will only makes me stronger.

Beta blocker was to treat my blood pressure, but I wean it off, two weeks my blood pressure was normalised after surgery.

I eat quite enough protein, but still skinny.

Thanx for approving my friend request Gerri.

Hello Tata,
I’ve read all the extra info you gave.
So I presume that you are on no kind of medication just now. Is that correct?
Is homeopathy available in Indonesia? If yes is it expensive?

Acquafortis,

Actually I’ve read some article which tell that homeopathy in this case will do the magic in reversing steroid side effect. But I’m not sure there’s homeopathic in indonesia, there’re lots of alternative medication and traditional, but never heard of homepathic available here.

You’re a homepathic. Any suggestion?

I believed steroid has lowered my immune system too. Do you think I can regain my health again?

Acquafortis,

Yup, currently I’m on no kind of any medication.

Happy you’re off beta blockers, Tata. Hopefully, the other steroid side-effects will be gone soon.

Yes I am a homeopathic pharmacist.
Yes homeopathy can help you feel better.
What I can suggest is based on what you said here so it is quite limited. Homeopathy aims to establish again balance in the person as a whole identity not just the disease the person has. That is why it is called holistic medicine.
I can’t see you or talk to you so a huge part of you for me is missing to “diagnose” precisely.
So all this said what I can suggest is Thuya. It is a renowned homeopathic remedy for cortisone intoxication.
Check if you have any homeopaths there, doctors or pharmacists. Check even what other holistic medicines or practices are there…they might not be expensive.
Let me know.
