Dawn Phenomenon

I was told that the Toujeo into my stomach caused the infection. That’s what the hospital told me while I was there from my insides literally exploding.

Thank you for your advice. I will try those and ask more about other injections and sites.

Catmann, eat less bread, fewer potatoes and less rice. These foods contain carbohydrates, which make your numbers rise.

Good luck.

I don’t even know what c-peptide or GAD is. Everything I know, I’ve researched on my own and asked questions from other diabetics. My family doctor doesn’t seem to know very much and I cannot afford a diabetic doctor’s new patient fees. Thank you though!!!

These lab tests are part of a standard panel used to diagnose Type 1 Diabetes.
Negative results on these tests with simultaneous diabetic indications would strongly point towards Type 2.

On the other hand, a Type 2 Diabetes diagnosis based entirely on A1c and/or a couple of BG readings would have the very real potential to be a less than accurate diagnosis.

One of the major national lab testing companies reports the following:
Positive rate in new-onset type 1 diabetes patients:
• GAD-65 antibodies = 68% positive
• ICA 512 antibodies = 72% positive
• Insulin antibodies = 55% positive
• ZnT8 antibodies = 63% positive
An increase in the number of positive antibodies is associated with a higher likelihood of type 1 diabetes.
The combined analysis has a 98% autoimmunity detection rate, with 1.8% diabetic individuals remaining as autoantibody-negative. Fewer than 3% of type 2 diabetics have positive antibodies.

“The cation efflux transporter ZnT8 (Slc30A8) is a major autoantigen in human type 1 diabetes”
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17942684

The combined measurement of ZnT8A, GADA, IA2A, and IAA raised autoimmunity detection rates to 98% at disease onset…

Again, I thank you!!!

It may be helpful to discuss with your doctor or request your medical records regarding the development of an infected abscess. You can request personal copies of your medical records. You may have to pay a small fee (the largest I’ve paid is $20).

Here’s a webMD listing of the possible side effects of Toujeo and Invokana:

I’ve read multiple posts about the side effects of Invokana. They can be quite severe- especially if you’re not hydrated enough. Are you absolutely certain that Toujeo injections were the cause? I would look into this further because that is not a common or rare side effect recorded for that medication.

Completely excluding insulin as a treatment method for diabetes will severely limit your options if the disease progresses further. I would highly recommend looking into the described incident to make sure that insulin injections were truly the cause. If they were, was it because of an infected injection site? Was it the type of insulin? Knowing the answers to these questions will significantly help you.

Can someone explain to me what LADA is? I see this mention quite often between diabetics.

Here’s an article that summarizes it pretty well: http://www.diabetesforecast.org/2010/may/the-other-diabetes-lada-or-type-1-5.html

Thank you so much katers87!!!

Try eating your normal lunch and then totally skip dinner 2-3 times and see what your morning glucose looks like on the days you skip dinner. I am highly intolerant of any carbohydrates at dinner time and limiting carbs to next to nothing at dinnertime cured my dawn phenomenon. I now make a Chia Seed pudding mixing 2 tablespoons Chia seeds + 1/4 cup sugar free Torani syrup for flavor + 1/2 cup warm water for dinner. After eating this, make same thing again and put in fridge to eat tomorrow dinner. Other low to no carb options are certainly available as dinner options for variety.

With the mental issues with my Mama, I rarely get to eat supper anymore. Most of the time it’s a granola bar or salad or drinking a Glucerna. I’ve started taking Apple Cider Vinegar tablets a few days ago. Several people said that it helped them.

Its helps with digestion. Because the “mère” in it is full of good bacteria.

I heard that several of my friends who are diabetic tried this and it helped to lower their daily sugar levels, A1C and even helped with Dawn Phenomenon so I am trying it. Here are several links about using this. I’ve only been taking it for about a week and my numbers ARE coming down but I just wish that I could understand more. I am a question asker BIG TIME so O ask, red, research, etc.

Just thought I would give it a try since others are seeing positive results. I figure it can’t hurt. LOL Plus it’s also good for blood pressure.

You are too funny Tim35!! LOL I’ve only been taking this for about a week and is HAS lowered my numbers some but between what I was told and what I’ve read it usually takes a couple of weeks. But my morning numbers as well as all day long are coming down. Morning Dawn Phen issue is lower but who knows. Could just be coincidence.

I agree, it sounds like insulin might be the option for you and a regular doctor can prescribe long acting insulin if not a fast acting one. An internist can prescribe a fast acting one if your regular Doctor won’t. But outright try asking your regular doctor for a fast acting insulin to try to control your diabetes better, if you want to try it. They don’t like to always prescribe it but I have been told they can as I am going to be moving to an area that doesn’t have an Endo and have been told my regular Dr will be able to prescribe it. I am Type 1 though and it is a necessity obviously.

Plus there are people on this site like me that were misdiagnosed at first with Type 2 Diabetes that turned out to be Type 1. My numbers kept climbing until I was put on both types of insulin.

Insulin can be trickier to use, it takes more thought than just taking a pill or two every day but you can adjust to what you need to get it under control. I have the Dawn Phenomenon and have to take extra insulin (now by pump) to control it. I did find if I dropped to low before 7:00 am my spike upwards would occur right after. If I have no drop at night my spike upwards doesn’t start until 8-9 am.
