Depression Meds and Diabetes

Hi all, I’ve been taking Lexapro for the last two years and I’ve had to increase my dose from the standard 10mg to now 20mg and we’ve noticed it’s not nearly as effective as it use to be. My doc’s suggestion would be to add something like Abilify or something similar to that in as an additional “helper.” The only downfall to that would be the obvious increase in blood sugar that they say is a side effect. I’m just looking for anyone that has taken it or has has had any experience with it and how bad was it on your blood sugars.

Thanks for any input!

Elizabeth

I’ve been taking Lexapro for several years. I gradually went up to the max dose which is 30mg. Maybe you could try that before you try a new drug?

My advice: do NOT take Abilify. Not only did it raise my blood sugars, but it made me almost constantly nauseous, and so sleepy that I was like a walking zombie. I now take 50 mg Anafrinil daily, which works wonders for me. I was also on the combination of Lexapro and Abilify. Anafrinil works better for me because I tend to have more problems with anxiety than depression. Just my 2 cents.

Do all those meds interfere with one’s glucose levels? I wouldn’t touch one if that is the case. High blood or even slightly elevated BS to me is by far the worst part of diabetes.
