Dexcom inserter

I followed the instructions in the app for how to set to vibrate etc but there is no vibrate as a selection in sounds. Very odd??? I guess I’ll just mute the sound on my iPad when I’m teaching etc.

@meee - As @Laddie had mentioned, what is the version of the Dexcom App software that you are running on your iPad ?

Although if you just now downloaded the app then you should certainly have the latest version. I am almost positive older versions of the app had exactly the problem as you describe.

I can’t tell what version it is? I’ll have to call apple. For now I will mute my sound on iPad because it’s already driving me nuts.

@meee - To get the version, go to (from the Dexcom App):
Settings --> Device Info --> Software

And to switch a particular alert to a Vibrate, you go into the Alerts for the given alert such as “Low” and you should see the list of all the different “tones” you can use for that alert. One of those you should see as labeled, “Vibrate” which is intended to put that particular to vibrate. Are you having trouble that the “Vibrate” is not showing up in the list or that even though you select it, the device still creates an audible sound (other than the 55 Critical Low Alert).

It’s 1.7.2. When I go to sounds there’s no vibrate. Plus when I mute volume on iPad it still alerts at the loudest volume😹 I won’t last long with this.

@meee - We also have the app version 1.7.2.

Is this the location you are going to?

Alerts --> Low --> Sound:
Where we now see 23 different sounds including such standard Dexcom sounds options as:
Vibrate Only
Fall Rate
High Alert
High
Low Alert
Low
Rise Rate
Beep
Short Beeps
Signal Loss Alert
Urgent Low Alarm
Urgent Low

as well as another 11 sounds with amusing names (Sonar Horn, Truck Siren, Oh-oh).

Do you see any of this?

Yes that is it but there is no vibrate ???

This is what I see. Baby cry is at the top. No vibrate only.

Mine all have vibrate available except for Urgent Low.

Huh. Looks a lot like the “Serter” (annoying name) for Medtronic Guardian 3.

@meee - Can you verify which Alert screen you were on? The title bar does not say. Perhaps you could specifically go onto the “HIGH” alert and check the sound options available there?

Mine has no vibrate only selection. As I’ve said. I’m not sure if this is because it’s on my iPad. But one of the people I talked to yesterday was sure you were not allowed to do that for alerts due to the FDA or something I’m not sure why since you can on your phone? :joy_cat:

Here are screen shots but the actual sound selection has no designation at the top.

@meee - As @Laddie has pointed out, the only alert for which “Vibrate Only” is not an allowed selection is the “Urgent Low” alert. So, if you are going into all the “other” alerts (ie - NOT the Urgent Low alert) then you should absolutely be seeing the “Vibrate Only” sound selection. You mentioned that someone at Dexcom said you can’t do this? I would claim that person is wrong. Clearly it works for us as well as works for Laddie. As well this is not an FDA restriction. Dexcom has a webpage where they clearly state that the Vibrate should be working as a viable selection.

“… if you have chosen vibrate-only as your programmed sound.”
“While most of these are infrequent, critical system alerts that will be audible even if the phone is on silent or vibrate include: …”
“This will allow you to choose vibrate-only as your sound for Low and High Glucose alerts, Rise and Fall Rate, and Signal Loss. Vibrate-only is not available for Urgent Low Glucose Alarm or critical system alerts. These will always require a sound.”

Also, have you performed an actual reboot of your Smart Device (iPad) since the Dexcom App was installed? Or whatever it is called in “Apple World”. Complete shutdown/poweroff/whatever (ie - not simply sleep or similar) followed by turning it back on. Then going into the alerts being sure NOT to go into the Urgent Low by mistake and checking for the presence of the Vibrate Only. Be sure to check the entire list on the off chance that the Vibrate Only is not alphabetical (just trying to think of anything here).

I’ve checked the entire list it’s not there trust me😹 I’ll try shutting off iPad and see if it makes a difference. I bought cheap earphones and will use that to stop the alerts for now I guess. Last night and today my Bg was in range all day so it was ok. But tomorrow I teach and likely will be all over.

@meee - An update to the Apple Dexcom Mobile App was released yesterday by Dexcom as v1.7.3.

You could try the update and perhaps they have resolved the issue you face?

Out of curiosity, I downloaded the Dexcom app onto my iPad. There were a bunch of screens that I had to go through and I have attached a screenshot of the relevant page. Because I would not enter my transmitter number because I don’t want to mess up my phone, I couldn’t get to the sound page. But I think this screen indicates that Vibrate option is not available on an iPad. When I go into my Sound menu on my iPad, I don’t see the Vibrate option for any of my alerts that I use Vibrate on my iPhone.

Yep looks like it. I’m going to have to buy a few more cheap earphones, cut off the end and tie something big on it so they’re easy to find. It’s crazy there is no way to stop the alert without an earphone. What a stupid design.

I’ll try. Thanks!

@meee - I am confident that @Laddie has pinpointed the issue exactly. After I read her posting, I did some searching on the iPad and “vibrate” in general and that all agreed with precisely what Laddie was saying. The iPad simply does not have the underlying hardware necessary to allow a vibrate. Nothing to do with the app. The app (apparently) simply recognizes the vibrate hardware is not present and does not present an option which in fact would not work.

I was going to suggest an iPod Touch (5 or 6) but it looks like they do not have vibrate capability either.
:frowning:

Thanks. I will ask apple the iPad software is being updated to include a finder so maybe they can add vibrate too to this app. I’m surprised ther is no vibrate though at all.
