Only $150,000 ( <--- being sarcastic but hopeful)

I'm going to start saving.

How come I never heard of this before?

This seems like a miracle. So why can't I find one U.S. based news report on this? The rest of the world is covering it.

"Only $150,000"? And it lasted eight months, and it lasted that long in only two of the eight subjects.

So lets say the average participant got four months coverage from the surgery. Would you be willing or able to have surgery every four months at a cost of $450,000 per year?

The cost needs to come down substantially, or the length of time the transplant lasts needs to be much greater. Actually both need to happen. Hopefully they will, but it doesn't sound ready for prime-time yet.

Is this not what we have all been waiting for??? No more shots, pump, transplants, snake-oil.

Am I celebrating too soon?

Is this a real alternative to daily doses of insulin?

Where is that "smart chap"? I have champagne ready!!!!!

More info...

This is from company called Living Cell Technology.

The process is Xenotransplantation.

The price will come down for sure. A good point made was that insurance company spends way more on diabetes complications so this would be cheaper to provide if price came down.

As for the "only 2 out of 8" I would say that's a GREAT start. They just have mimic the dose and enviorment from the 2 that were successful.

It's 8 months and counting. I read another article that says it could last for years.

Everything else seems like 10-25 years away. This is amazing news!

U R down with the talk, bro Danny. 'Mos def": LOL

God Bless,

Hey there Mikey,

Here are a few topics about Diabecell for you to check out:

Thanks Manny. The amount of info and opinions still seems kind of thin considering it seems like a good treatment.

I can't remember the last time they had news about a type1 person off of insulin that didn't have to take Immunosuppressive meds.

I'm sick of waiting, and I want this treatment as soon as it becomes more affordable and available.

Dear Santa...

I'm afraid to get excited. When I was diagnosed 30 yrs ago they said 10yrs for a cure. I haven't asked Santa for anything for myself in a very long time...maybe this year I'll write to him too Mikey.

Looks like Popular Science picked up this info also.

Yeah the article could have been better but at least they are reporting it.

This is how I'm feeling too.

When I was first diagnosed I was ready to try the Edmonton Protocol (islet transplants) then I discovered all the downsides and I was disappointed. I'm still hopeful, but I'm not holding my breath on a cure.

They isolate pig cells from the immune system with a membrane. The idea is very very old. That it took that long to make it truely work for 2 out of 10 patients is not very encouraging. Even for 10.000$ I would not participate I am sorry to say.

It's a new twist on islet encapsulation, which has been around for decades. Granted, this is more promising than the early work using agarose and those kinds of things, but it's going to have to do better to get insurance coverage or an already financially challenged population to open their wallets. The JDRF gives out a lot of grant money to study this type of technology, so I'm sure something better is already in the works, but I'd say that we still have some ways to go on this one before I jump out of my chair:)

This treatment sounds fantastic, i just hope it doesn't fade to nothing in the coming year and we never hear anything again.
