I am going on a Carnival Cruise, I will have my insulin pump. I will also bring pump supplies, insulin and syringes(incase pump malfunctions)in a carry on bag. Should I be concerned about going through security? will I encounter a problem with my syringes.
Bring double the amount of supplies you think you’ll need, Extra meter batteries are good to take along & an extra meter. Have prescriptions for all your meds & syringes. I’ve never had a problem traveling with syringes. Don’t know what ship security is like, but I request a hand inspection of my supplies when flying & don’t put insulin through X-ray. It’s not supposed to effect it much, but I don’t want to take any chances.
When you go through security, tell them you’re a diabetic with a pump. I’d check with Carnival to find out what you can expect from security.

I have been through airline security with needles and the pump, and your best bet with a pump is to just walk through security and don’t say a word. The machine that you walk through won’t pick up your pump, but if you show it too them, they will seperate you from everyone else and go through your carry on’s, your shoes, and your pump and wipe everything down with cotton wipes they put in a sensing device to verify that you have not been exposed to any bomb making materials.
The Cruise Ships are fine with it, they will even get you a fridge (for your insulin) and a sharps container for your room.
Everything went great with security…No problems. Although, I had one strange problem while I was in Mexico of course. As we departed the ship that morning, I was not feeling too good. i did not think it was anything to do with my bloodsugar since I had checked my BS that morning, ate breakfast and pumped my insulin. After about an hour is Progresso, Mexico, I was feeling worse!!! I had brought supplies with me, but not my bs meter. After a while, I checked my Infusion site and noticed it was not hooked correctly. Well it would not connect!! So, I changed the infusion set, but no delivery!!! Tried several times with no success. Feeling worse by this time and I knew the problem was HIGH BS!!! My husband decided we best head back to the ship. Well, by this time I was very nauseated… stood up and threw up on the beach!!! Made it back to the ship. BS was over 600!!! Changed reservoir and infusion set and pumped lots of insulin…slept it off and in 2 hours I was back to normal, but now sailing from Mexico. It seemed to be something with the reservoir. I wonder if that was one of the recalls!!!
