Not like this will help but some diabetes clinics have relations with health clubs… Also theres a group of trainers/etathletes that have some experience with diabetes and sports… A group called DESA http://www.diabetes-exercise.org/
Know its not ideal but its a start… Also talk to your CDE, sometimes they know of some exercise physiologists who are trained in dealing with diabetic clients…
All I know is that I seem to be getting larger every month and I need to find some kind of exercise, even if it’s a DVD. Does anybody use exercise tapes anymore?
There are several options for those who want to go to a gym. 1) YWCA’s are usually cheaper than YMCAs and men are welcome! 2) Some county rec centers have fairly good deals. Almost all gyms have January deals/discounts. 3) For those in certain parts of the country, the RUSH fitness centers always have some specials. I pay $20.10 per month (2010, get it!) that was a special in Jan/Feb. There may be other fitness centers like this elsewhere.
Many places have hiking clubs that do group hikes that range in fitness levels and levels of difficulty. Costs are minimal.
Some county rec centers offer good discounts for seniors. I had a great discount when I lived in Fairfax county VA but none here in western NC. Which is why I finally joined RUSH. Time will tell if I keep it up.
Has painful flashbacks to Richard Simmons… (and im talking when he was on daytime tv, not the videos, though both of them scare me)… Damn where does that guy get that kinda energy…
I totally agree. I was a Fitness World lifetime member for years. I had a sweet deal at the time, at only $20 a month- but I couldn’t take months off- the money came out whether I went or not. I found myself unable to go for a long time because it was open when I was at work, and closed when I was ready to go work out. So I finally ditched my membership when I moved somewhere that had no Fitness World. The gym memberships here are twice as much, even at the aquatic center. I do late night swims when the price is cheap, I go for long, aggressive walks, especially up hills. I run up and down stairs. I also try new things. I’ve gone rock climbing, I’ve gone cave spelunking, I’ve done yoga, pilates, kayaking and hiking. I’m looking into joining a dragonboat team this summer.
Aside from weight training, I’ve found that exercise hasn’t been something I needed to go to a gym for. But I agree, we should get discounts, BIG ones. I’d like to go tone up! Hehe.
I go to a gym for $10 a month, Planett Fitness. I check sugar before and drink a gatorade during cardio, check sugar after. That seems to be a good method for me, I have let the workers know about my diabetes, just in case. Somtimes I go to low, but I just keep sugar in check, hope it helps.
Those are good suggestions. I live in Fairfax county and I will tell you that even the rec centers are expensive (http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/rec/recenter-rates.htm), nearly $50/month, and that is with the senior discount. The YMCA is actually a bit more expensive.
Much of it really depends on what you want out of a gym. There are lots of places to get cheap access to a treadmill, elliptical and a few light dumbells. I chose my current gym specifically because of the weight training equipment and other offerings.
I get my gym membership through a discount program with my health insurance provided (Aetna). It is called GlobalFit.
The gym I go to will allow you to take time off for medical reasons. I just had to stop while my doc checked my heart but this has taken only a couple of weeks so I didn’t bother.
Can’t get back to the email where the person lives in Fairfax county and said the rec center is expensive. It has been 5 years since I was at that gym there so I guess it has gone up but my senior cost was about 30-35 when I did go. I still think that in general the YWCAs are cheaper in most communities, and especially if you get the January deal. The Fairfax rec center also had ‘scholarships’ for low income folks. I also agree with those who say that there are lots of free stuff to do. walking in a park, stepping in place and using free weights at home, etc. There is a whole video series using the step in place idea. Can’t think of the name of it right now.
