A lovely tradition!
My family (and extended family) love celebrating birthdays and holidays. We are foodies are too. We have always accommodated a wide variety of dietary needs so this isn’t an issue for us, for me. I make sure that there are dishes that are healthy for me to eat (and a keto daughter) and foods that I enjoy eating. I have been pretty disciplined with eliminating/limiting sugar and high carbohydrate/glycemic foods but I do plan on eating traditional fare with reason, compassion and wisdom. I also exercise regularly and foresee myself making sure that I get plenty of walks in, even during holiday gatherings.
3 days a year is about enjoying time with 4 generations of my family and I eat anything and everything. Thanksgiving, Christmas, and my birthday are the 3 days that I splurge on my 1 meal a day and take on the challenge of staying 100% time in range on those days. Being MDI, I review how my BG is trending hourly, for 48 hours after these meals, and adjust insulin shots accordingly and if it looks like I am rising faster than expected combine insulin with some brisk exercise.
This allows me to enjoy my time with the family while also evaluating how foods I would normally never eat affect my BG levels. My added incentive is that my 6-month endo visit is always on about Dec 1 and she carefully reviews my daily trends for the past 30 days. Since my A1C is always in the mid to high 5’s, I would face a stiff lecture if my BG went crazy after Thanksgiving.
Every one of us does what we feel is the best we can do as we are all different and there is no right or wrong answer.
I wish everyone along with their entire families the very best during this holiday season and keep the faith as tools will continue to improve and help us better manage our scourge.
