Diabetes in pop culture

Mary Tyler Moore who is on the Board of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Halle Berry is also diabetic, but I am not sure if she is insulin dependent.

Halle Berry is type 1, but she claims to have weaned herself off insulin, and now she is type 2. LOL! Here’s the link http://www.abcnews.go.com/Health/story?id=3822870&page=1/=
I have heard that people are mad at her for being a celebrity with diabetes and not using her status to bring awareness.

Now, knowing what we know about T1…do you really believe that she has become T2? Or is it that Hollywood doesn’t want people to think that she is “defective” because it takes away from her image. I just have a really hard time with this one…

i’'m pretty sure once your pancreas completely stops making insulin it won’t start again 10 years later. i can see how maybe she works out a lot and maybe is really sensitive to insulin because of exercise and maybe doesn’t need much insulin right now but she will always be type one.

I use my diabetes as a excuse for sandwiches awwww

This isn’t really pop culture, but the new Supreme Court nominee (Sonia Sotomayer) was diagnosed as type 1 when she was 8 years old. I know little about her, but I’ve been rooting for her, because I was diagnosed at age 8 too.

i was watching gilmore girls and the the girl that cooks at the hotel slipped, but wanted the gilmore mom to try her sauce. And the she replied that it was the best ever and that diabetics would line up to eat it… they did make a reference that it would be on top of waffles. Not sure what she meant by “we would all line up,” meaning we like sweets?

I love sweets. I miss sweets. But diabetes does mean “I” can’t eat sweets. I simply can’t eat desserts, use sweeteners, and still keep my blood glucose (sugar) levels in their target range on or off medication. (I’ve used Levemir and Januvia in the past, separately.)

I agree. I don’t violently shake when I get hypo. I mean the outcome is possible, yes, but the acting was a bit over the top.

When I was diagnosed, it was the first thing that popped into my head- omg I’m going to not be able to control my body like Julia in Steel Magnolias!

Me too- I really dislike the Jonas Brothers, but I give mad props to Nick for getting the word out. If someone can get us noticed, it’s a teen pop idol!

Yes, I remember this one! Something about some kind of special pig insulin that the daughter needs, but the father blows the money to pay off the woman he slept with- to keep her from telling his wife.

I recently watched an episode on HOUSE where there was a grown woman with type 1, she had really high blood sugar and passed out while driving, killing her husband and young son who were also in the car with her. She ended up going blind and dying in the hospital.

I was watching 30 Rock the other day, and, during season 1, they had the “Don Geiss Foundation for Diabetes” (or something, don’t remember the exact title). Anyway, to convince people to give money, one of the characters (Tracy Jordan/Morgan) gets up and tells a sob story about his young daughter who grew up eating tons of candy and ice cream and about how she was diagnosed with diabetes at age 10 (or so) because she ate so much sugar and got so fat.

During the speech, I was getting madder and madder, because – oh, well, I’m sure you guys understand why. Anyway, afterwards, he tells someone (Jack) that he doesn’t have a daughter and he just made the story up to make himself look good. Anyway, I’m still annoyed that they portrayed young kids as getting diabetes because they ate a bunch of sugar, but at least it was fake.

is it just me or did i just see a jonas brothers poster outside burger king. Just kinda ironic i guess, being a fast food place. I wonder if it eats burger king or gets discount on it. HA
