We ran an article today on Diabetes News Hound about diabetes appearing more on primetime television recently. Check it out here:Diabetes Boosting Its Primetime Presence
Do you know of any other recent episodes / characters on the topic of Type 1 or 2?
I’ve followed ABC’s Brothers & Sisters sporadically over the years and only recently caught a re-run episode with an ever-so-brief mention of one of the subject siblings’ daughter having to check her blood sugar before eating the treat mom stuffed in the lunch pail.
While it’s cool to have the topic brought up, how do you portray such an impactful disease in a television drama in a way that makes for water-cooler discussion the next morning? Have the character go into DKA? (Actually, why not? One episode had a sibling collapse on the beach during a wedding scene…)
Was flipping through channels last night & caught something on The Cleveland Show (Fox animated cartoon) about a character being T2, so I watched it. Hugely overweight character (thanks for the stereotype) who was about to pass out from a hypo. The character attempting to help her told her to think of bad food–potatoes, rice, ice cream. Then he got a syringe filled with maple syrup & an ambulance showed up.
Wasn’t accurate, but that’s the most I’ve seen on TV about diabetes.
